The eagle may also be the symbol of Christ or Christians.

@ TolaO: The poem reminds me of a confrontation or a surprise attack at sunrise.People coming by sea arriving to a land with a jungle maybe to capture the people there to enslave them as their forefathers did before them. They did not expect the people to defend themselve fiercely and it frightens them. The eagle could [...]

The poem above might be talking about strength of the eagle. But the truth is that some people just join big sounding words together and let you all knock yourselves out trying to interpret. I wonder how many of you read ‘Nightfall in Soweto’, that was the first I memorized. Even as a secondary school [...]

Emmanuella and Salau John aka Treasured1 may be able to help you more. I’ll say it fits in their camp.

In other words, @Abby, you’re saying that a poem is like a Rorschach inkblot ? Well, just as I wouldn’t think much of art where paint was randomly daubed on canvas, so I also don’t think much of poetry where words are randomly strung together in the name of ‘complexity’, and we poor readers are left grasping for [...]

lol I feel you. Can see why you feel the way you do. Poetic meanings are not generally loosely translated. Personally, I think some poets thrive on being abstract and complex. Poems could attract varied interpretations from readers and still not come close to the writer’s intent. Am sure that can be gleaned from the [...]

I’ve stated severally on this site that I’m not a natural appreciator of poetry. Unlike prose which is relatively constrained to obey rules so that it generally has to make sense to the reader, poetry knows no such limitation. It gets so bad sometimes that such poems make little sense to me. Take this poem [...]

Well because then females liked poetry a lot. Now recharge card and Mr Biggs kinda does the work poetry did then. For guys, sex also speaks much more and louder than poetry do. But if you make some research you’d find out lotta people still appreciate poetry though. NS ladies are quite different too cuz [...]

Probably because the old poetry follows a format we have been acustomed to and learned at school. It is part of our collective memmory. Also because poetry deals a lot with feelings and it is easier to confront emotions when the conflict or trauma has past.

Poetry is the form of writing that best captures a person’s state of mind at a particular place and about a particular issue. Poetry’s one emotions in writing. Think you guys defined it better but that’s mine.

Poetry is personal, that much I’ve noticed. Personal in more ways than other writings. I dare say, than an auto-bio. Its elegant, beautiful, flowery, soulful, songlike staples aided by its form: rhymes, stanzas, run-on-lines, etc and sometimes the delibrate absence of such are its boosts. Essentialy, a poet’s poem is the state of his soul [...]
