Eronmwon the witch

The Bini people of Edo State

I despised her; Eronmwon – precious jewel, my foot. How dare she steal him? Uteteh, whom I gave my womanhood to, now she wants to marry him. Well, it won’t happen and I knew what to do to stop it.

‘Aisosa, are you sure?’

‘Yes, I saw her. She was chanting while holding blood-stained feathers. Two days after her sister died. When her aunty died last week I knew I had to speak up.’ That was all I had to do.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The crowd’s elation quickly turned into cries of despair. Eronmwon, dressed in our tribal Okuku – coral beads sewn into her hair, Ivie-guru around her neck, and Emi-ehorivie earrings looked more beautiful than usual. Why her kinsmen decided to accuse her during her traditional wedding, I don’t know, but I couldn’t have planned it better myself.

‘It’s a lie. I’m not a witch.’ She wailed, while they dragged her away.

‘That’s what all witches say before they finally confess.’ they replied

Eronmwon’s screams were heard across the entire village as they took her to the witchdoctor. She was flogged and devil beans that causes an intense itch until you beg for death poured into her hair. Soon Eronmwon was ready to confess to anything to end the torture and as culture demanded, she was exiled from the village.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

But Uteteh didn’t return to me, instead he went to Adesuwa. I was so enraged that I blurted out,

‘Should I accuse her too? Like I did Eronmwon?’

You would think my story made a difference. You would think, it would lead to a rethink of the torture people are put through to confess to witchcraft, but it didn’t, because as I was being flogged for my transgression, beside me another woman was being tortured.

Accused of being a witch.

    1. @Whitemosquito glad you saw the funny side even though it’s a serious issue.

Thanks for reading and the comment

  1. Nice! Short and powerful. I love stories that exhibit Karma… her bad behavior came back to bite her in the ass. Love this

    1. @Ivie9ja thanks a lot for reading and the comment, yes, all stories I feel should always have a lesson behind it. I’m sure next time she will think twice before accusing someone else
