Jibu People

“Abomination!!” The Waziri flared, his voice going up several notches as he spoke indigenously “how dare he defy the land by marrying her”

The chiefs who sat unclad with the Waziri remained silent for a while,

“I told you he was trouble, right from the moment he cried during his circumcision” one of the chiefs started, “that weakling!!” he spat, vexed.

“But he had already served her family for 5 years, isn’t that our tradition?” Chief Tann said, his body quivered with only fresh leaves hanging about his groin.

“Nonsense” Chief Zunbi retorted, his eye bulging in rage “The firewood had been set on fire for more than 3 months now and she still couldn’t conceive.”

“The gods clearly disapproved that marriage” the Waziri replied. “Send out the town crier, every man gathers here tomorrow. Meanwhile, someone bring Shidin here now”

Shidin had left his mother who had been grinding raw corn for dinner and appeared at The Waziri’s palace, his bare body blackened more under the burning firewood.

“Idiot, our women are stuck indoors tomorrow because of the ritual we’ll have to perform for you” Chief Zunbi flared up once he stepped in. The Waziri looked sternly at Shidin who remained silent,

“Why did you do it?” he finally asked trying hard to hide the anger in his voice.

“She is fertile, the problem is from me.” There was a murmur in the room “The night we were to ‘do it’, I had crossed over her clothes (the leaves she wore about her waist)” he stopped talking for he knew they had gotten his message

“You fool, you dare test the gods?” Chief Tann said in a shrill note “You shall forever remain impotent, get out!!”

Now he simply awaited his doom.

haahaha……i’m so glad you liked it :D yhu shoulda seen me smling!!!
well its short cos its meant to be just 300 words-that was the instruction
and as for that part, its believed in their tradition that a man must never cross over a woman’s cloth(which is the leaves she wears about her waist, the only cloths they wear) if he did, he would be impotent. and yeah, it had to be sex before marriage for them.

Thanks for the explanation, I now understand it…Gr8 piece but short since it’s for the competition
