Iya Rere

Iya Rere

A hymn to a Mother

A song for a Solace

Rendered by a sojourner

In this vale of tears.

Conceived in a womb as pure

Betrothed to a man so pure

So to conceive a virgin Son

Of a virgin mother’s womb.

Soaring above the clouds

With an Ivory crown of lauds

Extolled above the seraph

And to the earth, a purity’s glyph.

A son’s best parting gift

To a race so strength bereft

Whose hails to her should resound

As her love to all abound.

Though wicked men blaspheme

Good Christian men must esteem

The glories of her purity

The honours of her charity.

And on this day* of her coronation

Shall we not render an adoration?

To a Lady of the great litany, deserving a dulia

Queen of Nigeria!
