Lookout for Miss Right- Episode 32

If I was angry, she was angrier. She glared at me defiantly; then turned to Oscar.
“He thinks he’s in love with me. I doubt he is.” She said.
Oscar looked at both of us and knew better than to say anything. “I think you both need to talk this out. I’m outta here.”
He left before we could say a word. I could tell he didn’t want a part in this awkward situation.
“You need to stop telling these fibs.” She said, standing with hands akimbo. “Don’t delude yourself that you’re in love with me.”
“How about we talk about you for a second, Flores.” My voice dripped sarcasm. “What happened to your vow of chastity? Did you throw it out the window for a tumble in the hay?”
I saw the slap coming before I felt it.
“How dare you?” She whispered. “You have no right to judge me. You have no idea what happened.”
“Enlighten me, Madam.” I said, still hurt.
“I owe you no explanation.” She turned to go.
Reflexively, I drew her back, pulling her towards me. “We’ve been friends for too long, Flores. We’ve been through a lot together; the least you could do is tell me what happened. You owe me an explanation, please.”
She peered at me with those eyes that made me melt inside. I wanted to hold her…oh, how I wanted to hold her and wipe the pain from her eyes.
“It was a mistake. It just happened. We…things got a little out of hand. I wanted to stop but…he…he didn’t. He just kept going…and then I couldn’t fight it anymore. I regretted it later. He made me break my vow.” She said quietly.
“When was this?” I asked.
“Right before the Sonia episode. I found out I was pregnant when I was recuperating. Then he asked me to marry him.”
“And you said yes.” I added.
“What was I supposed to do? He’s my boyfriend. We’ve been dating. It was going to happen sooner or later.”
“Do you love him?” I asked softly.
She looked away from me.
“Tell me, Flores. Do you love him?”
“Don’t ask me that, Jake. I beg you.” She said. “I’m carrying his baby. We’re getting married in a few weeks.”
“You’re going to be unhappy.”
“Who says I’m going to be happy with you?” She laughed bitterly. “I’ve been around you for eight years. Were you blind all that while?”
“Yes, I was. I was also stupid. But now I’ve found you…its too late.”
“You’re infatuated, trust me. This will all be over in a week.” She assured me.
She was wrong. Six weeks later, she was still topmost on my mind. For some reason I couldn’t understand I couldn’t rid my mind of her. I kept my distance from her. I figured it’ll be easier to forget her that way.
As her wedding drew closer, she stopped attending our weekend hangouts. It was a bit of a relief to me, although I missed her acutely.
There was no Flores to scold me, to make me laugh and to pamper me. Somehow the little sunshine she had brought to my life had disappeared. My days became dreary and dull.
I began doing things mechanically; and life began to lose its meaning for me. As her wedding day drew closer, I hurdled back into my shell.
Oscar and Femi knew what I was going through and they did everything to cheer me up. They avoided talking about Flores in front of me.
The first thing that piqued my interest in a while was when Femi offered me an all-expense paid vacation to any State of my choice in Nigeria. I chose Calabar. I asked my boss for my long overdue leave and soon I was set to go. That was all the excuse I needed to not attend Flores’ wedding.
I left for Calabar with every intention of getting over her. Meet new girls and flex the state, visit the famous Obudu ranch and catch as much fun as possible.
I gotta tell you, even as I boarded that plane…I thought about her. She had come to mean so much to me in a way I hadn’t noticed. She was the one who made little details in my life matter. How I was going to live the rest of my life without her by my side was a mystery to me. I loved her that much.
I had finally found my Miss Right but I couldn’t have her. What an irony life is!
The flight to Calabar was short and stress free. Once I landed, I made my way to my hotel. Femi had indeed done a great job. That guy was one to reckon with and I owed him a lot.
I spent the first four days exploring the city. I went swimming, visited the ranch and lots more. Did I meet ladies? Definitely. Was I interested? Absolutely not! Did I try to be interested? Of course!
So what was the problem? Flores. That was the problem. I carried her with me everywhere I went. It was very frustrating.
It was on my tenth day there that I got the call from Femi.
“Hey pal. What’s up?” I asked.
“I’m good. I’m good. How’s Calabar?” He asked.
I sighed. “Beautiful city.” I replied.
“Ahh…okay. That’s great.” He cleared his throat; I could tell he had something to say.
“Is everything okay?” I asked. “How’s Oscar?”
“He’s okay. We’re all fine.”
“So, what’s wrong?” I asked.
“It’s Flores.” He said.
I sat up immediately. “What about her?”
“She called off the wedding.”
“You heard me. The wedding’s off.”
I almost jumped for joy. “So, where is she now?”
“That’s the problem. We don’t know. We can’t find her.”
