Lookout for Miss Right- Episode 9

I couldn’t believe my ears. I blinked, looking from one man to the other. They were hefty and well dressed.

“I don’t understand.” I said. “Who are you?”

Both men looked threatening enough but I wasn’t bothered. They were infringing on my rights. Although I was a good six feet, I knew I couldn’t take them on together. Not with their experience.

“Let me repeat my question. Where’s Sonia Odeniran?” The tall one spoke in a menacing tone.

I was becoming irritated with this whole Sonia saga. From one drama to the other. I hadn’t even finished wrapping my head around the incident that had taken place last night and here were these strangers showing up on my doorstep early in the morning. Couldn’t someone have a little privacy? Besides, the same question kept plaguing me, how had they found out where I live?

“You know what?… I can’t do this now. I have to go to work in a few minutes. Why don’t you come back another time?” I turned to go back into the house.

“I’m sorry, but we have to do this now. We have information that you saw her last night.” The short one spoke.

“Information from who?” I asked. I was becoming uncomfortable with the fact that my every movement was being monitored. “Is someone stalking me?”

None of them answered. This infuriated me, and without a second thought I entered the house and shut the door firmly behind me. I thought they would try to force the door open .They didn’t.

This couldn’t continue. I decided. I guessed that the men outside were Chief Odeniran’s goons. But I didn’t give a damn. They couldn’t just barge into my life and disrupt it for me, no matter who they were.

I dressed meticulously, taking my time. I knew I was going to be late. Finally, I was done. I took a deep breath and opened my door, praying that they had left.

Yes, they had. But someone else stood there. My ever recurring nemesis. Barbara.

I groaned inwardly. What the hell was going on here?

“I can’t talk now. I’m late for work,” I said, brushing past her and heading towards my car.

“I need to talk to you.” She said following me.

“I suddenly seem to have become a celebrity. Everyone wants to talk to me.” I said sarcastically, making a beeline for my car. These days I seemed to always be on the run.

“Please.” She was right behind me.

I got to my car and turned to face her. “Answer this question before I talk to you.”

“How did you know where I live?” I asked.

She paused.

I shook my head. She wasn’t ready to talk. I yanked open the door of my car. It was then I saw the black jeep parked across the road. From where I stood I could make out the faces of the men that had been on my doorstep just a few minutes ago. What was going on here? I wondered.

“I want to talk about Sonia.” She said finally.

I stopped mid way. Everything was beginning to fall into place. I started regretting the day I met Sonia Odeniran.

“Do you know where she is?” She asked without mincing words.

At this point I wished I was an ardent woman-beater, the hot slap I would have given her would have taken her two weeks to recover. I restrained myself. I had vowed never to hit a woman and not even this lady was going to make me break my vow.

“I think I’m the one who needs answers here. So start spilling…” I said, anger welling up in me. She had been in cahoots with Sonia all along? Yesterday had been no coincidence at all.

“There’s no time for that now. Just tell me if you know where she is.”

“You have some nerve, lady. You walk up to me in my own house and demand answers from me. Do I look stupid to you?” I was almost raving mad.

She instantly looked apologetic. “Its urgent, please.”

“She’s at home. I dropped her off at home last night.” With that I entered my car and started the ignition. “Hope you’re satisfied?”

I didn’t wait for her to answer. I drove off, fuming. Somehow, I felt used. First Sonia, now Barbara. I played back everything that had happened yesterday, from the so- called date to Barbara showing up. Take-out indeed.

I arrived at work ten minutes late. I had no idea what the day had in store for me. If only I knew…

My colleague, Jennifer was tense behind her desk.

“Why are you late?” She asked as I entered.

“Got held up. What’s up? You seem tense.”

“Someone big showed up. He’s been in with the manager for a while.”

“Who is it?” I asked.

“Chief Odeniran.” Jennifer replied.

  1. Uh-oh…trouble is brewing

  2. This was a bit slower than previous installments. I felt that there were parts that weren’t really needed, like the patagraph about wife beating. But you ended on an interesting note.

  3. @TolaO.Thanks for reading!

  4. Still going well. Beautiful.

  5. @Mimiadebayo I don’t understand why Barbara is all of a sudden his nemesis. There is no bad blood between them at least none that you have previously mentioned.

Anyway still cool, like the way you are dragging it out and increasing suspense

  6. @louis.Thanks for reading and commenting!
