I was stunned. She was the last person I expected to see at my doorstep at this ungodly hour.
“I know you’re surprised to see me,” she said coming closer to me. I could see her face clearly now, she looked gorgeous as usual but there was something off kilter about her that I couldn’t figure out.
“Talk to me, Jake. I’m sorry about today,” she said.
I wanted to ask her how she had found my house and why the hell she had come. I don’t know what but something about her was creepy.
“Won’t you ask me in?” she asked peering up at my face.
Not on your life, I wanted to say. Instead I said: “Its late. Why don’t we do this another time?”
“I know you’re angry but please I just wanna talk. And make up for standing you up earlier today” She was pleading with me now.
“Wait, tell me why you stood me up” I said, I needed to know.
She looked away from me, and in that instant I knew it had been a deliberate act. She had stood me up on purpose.
I stepped away from her. “Like I said, let’s do this another time.”
“Jake!!” she screamed, holding my arms tightly, “please, don’t go. Don’t leave me here”
Now she was scaring me. This whole situation was getting weirder and weirder. First, Chief Odeniran’s daughter who had stood me up then showed up on my doorstep hours later begging me for… what?
“How did you know where I live?” I asked.
Something was not right here. I could feel it in my gut.
“I…uh, asked around. You’re pretty famous,” she said in a tiny voice.
I knew she was lying. She was different from the Sonia I had met at the party. Here, she was like a timid child who was scared of getting a good spanking. It was then I noticed she was shaking. Her hands were quivering noticeably.
“Are you okay?” I asked, I needed to get out of this situation fast. I particularly didn’t like discussing with her outside at this time of the night, besides, I’d had a long day and had to go to work early the next morning.
“Listen, Sonia, let’s do this some other day. I really need to get inside. I’ve had a long day” I tried to dismiss her.
“I just want to talk. To you.” She really sounded pathetic.
This couldn’t be the same person who had stood me up, begging to talk to me. Something was definitely not right.
I held her hands, they were still shaking considerably.
“You don’t look fine to me. C’mon, I’ll take you home. I’ll call you tomorrow so we can talk, okay?”
She shook her head, and then did something really unexpected. She threw herself at me, wrapping her arms around me. She was surprisingly strong, it took all the strength I had to pry her away from me.
I held her at arms length, pinning her hands beside her.
“Let’s go inside. I’m cold,” she said.
I noticed she was grinning widely at me, I noticed something else too. The look in her eyes. It was manic.
No way I was going to let her into my house. Not this night. Not ever.
“I’m taking you home” I said , pulling her along with me.
“My home is with you.”
I stopped in my tracks. Now this was getting stranger than I thought. What kind of statement was that? I barely knew her, for Chrissakes. Infact after this ordeal I wasn’t sure I even wanted to know her.
“You’re not hearing me, Jake.” She was tugging at me. “It’s you I want.”
I didn’t answer her. I had come to one conclusion, she was insane. And I was going to take her home. Then I realised, I didn’t know her house.
“Where do you live?” I asked.
“You want to take me to my house?” she asked.
“Er… I’d like to see where you live. Then I can spend the night,” I lied, hoping she’d take the bait.
She did. She was like a small child who had just been told that Santa was real. I couldn’t begin to imagine what was wrong with her.
I led her to my car and she gave me directions to her place, chatting meaninglessly all the way.
We got to our destination after a fifty minute drive. I led her to her doorstep and watched her fumble with the door knob. Finally, the door opened and she entered.
“Come in. And welcome to my castle,” she said.
“Beautiful” I said, still standing outside.
“Come in, I’ll fix you dinner and we’ll talk.” She was smiling in a woozy manner.
“I’ll be right back. Let me lock the car,” I said.
I walked away and felt her watching me. I got to the car, unlocked the door and entered, without wasting time, I started the ignition and zoomed away.
By the time I got home, I was drained. The drama of the day was too much for me. As soon as I got home and checked that there were no more sinister visitors, I dropped into bed.
I slept for less than five hours, by six am I was up. I dragged myself out of bed into the shower.
Some thirty minutes later as I planned to leave, I heard a knock on my door. Who could that be this early morning? I wondered.
The knock came again and I answered it. Two men in suits stood on my doorstep. I had never seen them before.
“Good morning gentlemen, how may I help you?” I asked.
“Are you Mr Jacob Kojo?” The taller one asked.
“We are looking for Sonia,” he said.
I stared at him, without saying a word.
