It’s a Shame

It’s a shame

That the stories of our riches

Are only stories

Folktales, like dog and tortoise

That we are fresh cows

Begging for soured goat milk

It’s a shame

It’s a shame

That starvation feeds us dead

When we feed other nations

That we live in darkness

When we are the source of power

It’s a shame.

It’s a shame

That our Delta has no Niger

But streams and creeks

In which hide our friends

Robbers of our bliss

Drilling our blood

It’s a shame.

It’s a shame

We build their mansions

And live in hurt

These stories will tell themselves

But it’s a shame

It’s a big shame.
