You Taught Me

You taught me papa,
that the way to heaven
is paved with lack and tears,
that they who wear finery,
will never see the streets of gold.
You taught me that blessings,
come from God and I only need pray.
But now I see– for still in that Bible,
you see the power to make wealth,
the wish above all else to prosper-
Was it not your God who said,
‘The diligent will stand before kings?’

You taught me Papa but now I see,
for I am grown and ready to choose,
these parts of righteousness and fatness.
