Girl Child Marriage

Your husband is here
To take you to your new home.
I saw the joy in daddy’s eyes
And felt the pain in mummy’s heart
As she let out those words.

I am just ten years old
Why is marriage the next step for me?
Why do I need a new home?
What if I don’t want a new home?
Probably mummy understands my plight
Her reason for being sad
But who am I to speak?

I’ve always admired female professionals,
Female leaders
And I wanted to be like them
Even better than what they are.
I aspired to have my own life
Then I can think of having a husband
Then I’ll be matured enough.

But here am I
Like a sheep being lead to slaughter
My new ‘grandfather husband’
Leads me away
He feels so elated
Like he just won a lottery.

Don’t you have any shame?
Can’t you see I’m still a child?
Don’t you understand
“Marriage” means:
Mature age’?
I can’t cook for you
I can’t help you out with chores
What do you really want from me?
I screamed within
But couldn’t be heard.

Is it a crime to be a girl?
Why do I have to leave everything
Just for marriage
At this age?
What culture is this?
That throws the dream
Of a girl child
Into the dungeon of marriage
At the wrong age?

Like every other girl;
I’m now living each day
With my ‘grandfather husband’.
I sit at home
Doing nothing profitable for myself
He might die soon
And I’ll be given to his son as wife
O the bitter side of life!

I look upon my daughter
Who is now eight,
I imagine her fate
If history will repeat itself
She will be given away soon.

I don’t want her
To live a life like mine!
I wish there is a voice
Out there
To speak for her
And every other girl child in the world!
I wish we could all take a stand
And say no to “Girl Child Marriage”!
I wish we could leave them to grow
And choose for themselves
At a reasonable age.

Who will be a voice for this voiceless girl child?
Who will help her speak to have a right to decide on what she wants?
Who can stand to abolish this disgusting culture of “Girl Child Marriage”?

Every Girl Child has a life
They have a future
They have a dream
They can decide
Don’t deter it with your culture
The Girl Child needs a voice!
