A total hush fell on the class as I walked into the midst of the students. I kept my face on the ground hoping and praying that they will go back to their gossiping and discussions and singing but it was as if God decided not to answer my request at that moment. I finally found what looks like an empty seat and thankfully sank down unto it. I removed my backpack from my shoulder and busily ventured into its confines pretending to look for something in it in a bid to further avoid eye contact with anybody.
By this time whispers had ensued from every corner of the room. The girls were busy giggling to one another as if they are in a comedy show and the boys were talking in a hush while trying to decide who will be brave enough to ask the question uppermost in everyone’s minds.
I finally decided to brave the atmosphere. I looked up and saw most of the students’ eyes on me. I quickly looked back down but before the cat-calls and teasing could start the teacher walked into the class. I breathed a deep sigh of relief. God had finally answered my prayers; the inevitable awkwardness of the first minutes had been averted.
“Alright, everyone settle down. Let’s begin today’s work.” The teacher said and turned to the board to write ‘arithmetic’ in bold letters.
I looked into my backpack and withdrew a new exercise book for the subject. All the notes I used in my former school are no longer useful as the method of teaching differs with each school. I sighed to myself as another process of adjustment began.
As I placed my book on the desk in front of me, I noticed a shadow standing beside me. I looked up slowly following the physique from the long legs and found myself looking into the beautiful face of the angel I saw earlier. He was looking at me with a bit of frown on his face. I cleared my throat nervously.
“Excuse me.” He said. “Where did you come from and why are you sitting at my desk?”
Before I could will my brain to unscramble enough to supply me with an intelligent answer, the teacher finished with what he was writing on the board and turned to the class.
“Chris.” He called with a trace of impatience in his tone. “Would you please find somewhere to sit so I can start my class?”
The angel beside me answered. “I’m sorry sir but this girl is sitting at my desk and I was just trying to find out why.”
I could have died of embarrassment. Suddenly, the attention of the whole class was on me; teacher and students alike. What I thought had been averted had eventually caught up with me, only this time it was multiplied in ten fold.
I looked up to find the teacher staring at me. “You must be one of the new students resuming in school today.” He said with a smile on his face. I nodded vigorously as if he had actually asked the question of me instead of stating a fact. Out of the corner of my eye I glimpsed Chris shifting impatiently. “Ok then, can you find another empty seat to occupy? My time is far spent as it is.”
“Ok sir.” I whispered. I turned to slide my backpack off the arm of the chair and that was when I noticed another bag hanging from the other side of the chair. The bag that obviously belongs to the person sitting at the desk. In my flustered state earlier I had not noticed it.
I stood up and looked around and luckily for me another desk was empty beside the one I just vacated. I watched Chris sit at his desk and suddenly I was sure of two things. First, I wouldn’t get a lick of anything the teacher says today. And second, I was absolutely mesmerized by Chris.
