Ancestor Mothers

Ancestor Mothers

From the beginning of time, My ancestors mothers,
Have believed and worshiped the Almighty Creator
Great big and tall women
Big head wraps tied around their heads
Thick colourful wrappers tied around their ample bosoms
Hands raised towards the sky
As their thick bodies bounced up and down in rhythm to their movement
They communicated with the great Creator through songs, cowries, fans and mirrors
And offered food, drinks and music to the Supreme one with great respect
Carefully pouring a few drops of alcohol on the soil and breaking kola nuts
As peace offering, careful not to make the lesser gods tipsy on the generous libation
They worshiped in great peace and respect
Careful not to incur the wrath of the Great Creator nor the lesser gods

Then the uninvited strangers came to our land
With their big book of “wisdom”
In an air of superiority
In condemnation of our worship
Calling them heathen practices and acts of the devil
Teaching us what we already knew
There was but one Almighty Creator
Of course we knew this !

You don’t think we assumed
The earth fell from the heavens
And the heavens jumped
From the earth and got stuck above ?
Do you?
Our ways might have been different and a tad bit unusual to you
You don’t think we were stupid do you ?
Maybe greed, pride and ignorance occasionally got in the way
Making our practice seem like folly
As no explanation was required for many acts

My ancestor mothers saw the Almighty Creator in everything
The rich endless Earth,
The sun,
The moon
And The stars
The flowing rivers with the mysteries below,
The changing seasons with their different messages
The winds and their language
The large trees with mysterious branches
The Rocks with odd caves
Most important you and me
So please,
Do not condemn my ways,
For you do not understand its beauty and mystery
Because it does not come from the pages of a book.

cool piece for a freethinker tho..

  2. @kleavajimcy thanks alot. No I am not a sango worshipper oo. I worship only one God, that is God Almighty…I felt like pushing boundaries alittle, with this poem about divinity..
