Life At The Georges’ Chapter 11

There was a sharp wind that blew through the parlour. Everything was in slow motion. My mum’s cry was heightened, my fear was above the roof and my dad’s face was just full of sadness. There was about one minute silence until mum broke the silence with one of her vampire like screams.

“WHAT? WHAT RICHARD? IS IT YOUR BROTHER RICHARD? WHAT DO THEY WANT WITH RICHARD?” she kept on asking all this questions as she scattered her hair and threw a pillow across the parlour. The only thing fresh about my mum’s anger is the way her accent lightens up. An angry Latino’s voice is just divine.

“Jorge, get me my phone now” she screamed

“What do you want to do with your phone honey?” my dad asked as he moved closer to her to calm her down

“I’m calling the police. I sure as hell don’t want them to kill my daughter but you can’t kill your brother either” she replied, this time climbing the stairs herself to get the phone in her room.

“Dad, who are these people and what do they want with Uncle Richard?” I asked with the worst imaginable things going through my mind

“I really don’t know. I really don’t. He is supposed to come for an appendix surgery tomorrow. This is a surgical operation I can do in my sleep. I get that they can’t sue doctors for the death of patients but they can investigate into it. Irrespective of all this, I can’t kill my younger brother. It’s not possible.” Dad lamented

“Also, my daughter’s life is hanging in the balance. I really don’t know what to do” he said with water in his eyes.

He however resisted the urge to cry. I thank God he didn’t. I would’ve been scarred for life. I mean, I’ve caught mon pere and ma mere doing the nasty when I was like 10. Scarred me till date. They totally ruined the concept of shag for me till I was like 18. However, Temitope with her awesome rack helped me mend the scar a little bit.

“I can’t find the stupid phone” mum shrieked as she ran down the stairs bringing me back from an historical past of where I was de-cucumbered. From the way she ran down, I think it’s safe to say that upstairs is nothing short of a pig sty with the way she would’ve ransacked it.

“What are we going to do now” dad asked with more calmness

“In my opinion, I think we should just let the bastard bleed to death on the table” I thought to myself. Frankly, he’s not my favourite uncle. I have one thousand and one reasons for him to be dead but now that his death is a fact in issue, I will rather he didn’t die.

“Who would want Richard dead ehn? Who?” mum asked

Who wouldn’t? I mean, I’ve been tempted more than once to pour acid on his body.  I mean, who buys SEGA for a person on his eighteen year old birthday. Before I unwrapped the gift, he said he bought video game. Audio game ni.

He was also the one that made my parents to send me to Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna when I was JSS3.  He claims it will make me physically and mentally stronger. I almost died from frog jump every day, I had to feign epilepsy so they could transport me back to Lagos.

Anyways, he might be weird but he is family. I certainly do love him and I don’t want to see him six feet under.

“Guys, guys… another video was just sent” dad screamed as he called the attention of both mum and I. It was already 10pm and I hadn’t eaten since morning.

“What’s in the video honey? What’s there?” mum shouted like a typical mother

He pulled us closer as he played the video. The background of the video was quite dark, they were about four guys present, all wearing masks. One was recording while the rest were holding sticks. The leader started speaking with surprisingly good English. He was even wearing a tie.

“Good evening Dr. Olumide, how are you this evening? Not to worry! Your daughter is safe. She’s in a room eating rice and watching Spongebob. Anyways, by this time tomorrow your daughter will be in your arms if you do what we ask but if Richard isn’t dining with Peter, John and Elijah by this time tomorrow, well, you will need a welder to weld your daughter’s bones together. BE WISE!”

“God! Why us? Why us?” mum started once again. The crying started and started increasing in volume.

“I think I should send a reply to the email since that’s the only means of contact we have” dad said as he scrolled his phone to his audio recorder.

“Yes, I think that’s a good idea.” I replied

He clicked on the audio recorder and started recording.

“ehmm. Sir, I received both your videos. Pls sir, pls release my daughter. Whatever you have between yourself and Richard, don’t place my daughter in the middle. If you want money, I will give you money. Please, I can send 5 million naira into your account now. Just release my daughter”

Afterwards, he used it as an attachment and sent it to the email of the abductors.

When he was recording the message, something caught my ears. 5million naira! This was a man that said he didn’t have 500,000 naira for a car that I wanted to buy when my Honda spoilt. kidnap me too ohhhhhhhh

“yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh” mum shouted as we heard a loud thud in the kitchen.
