Here be Dragons

Old cartographers who thought Earth had edges

And were too afraid to go find them, would make maps

That had, in place of uncharted alien lands,

That inscription:

“Here be Dragons”

They knew boundaries – you too should;

Because the best advice no one will ever give you

Is to never try demystifying yourself,

Mark out your dark places and place on them a notice:

“Here be Dragons”

But if all your dreams trace deep

Into a longing, submerged in the abyss of your soul

Beyond the vale of knowing – of safety,

Don’t dredge for it – Abandon and flee.

The snake-oil merchants of self help myths

Will ask you to burrow a hole in yourself

And find the shining gem of superiority in you

That you should see beauty in the knots of earphones lying on your nightstand

That the rust creaking of your wardrobe door contains meaning

They’ll say the torn browned-out singlet on your neck has wisdom in its threading

And the itch on your buttocks as you sit on the toilet bowl ready to shit, is somehow genius

Live in your life, in this moment, they insist

But see, brother –

There is darkness in you

A place to be inscribed: “Here be Dragons”

A vicious, vengeful doom

Walled away by divine evolution,

But when you take the hammers of self love at it

And you try to discover yourself

You will meet Pandora’s fate.

Dragons belching fiery balls of self-ruin

Deep, murky rivers filled with the slime of despondency

Cackling parrots, taunting: “Escape, escape…”

While in their talons, they have arrows of terror

A terror that was made from the original seeds of hopelessness this world grew from

Dread demons will leap at you and entangle your spirit

Befoul it, crush it…

You will stare at the mirror and hate what stares back…

And still, much darker things lurk there

Leave yourself shrouded in unfamiliarity

Do not go past the bounds of sense…

Of here, of now –

There, be dragons…

  1. Hmmm, this is really something… but I don’t know if I quite understood it fully. O-Money, I need some clarification man.

@six, Wadup…. I wrote this sometime after seeing a friend buy another Self-help book to add to his already impressive collection of them. I really don’t think we should explore all of our personal traits, an idea many self-help books oppose. Each person has some darkness in them and sometimes, its best to leave well alone. How you be?

P.S. Your last entry inspired me to write a conversation between a Xtian and an atheist. thanks for the seed-idea.

      1. Hehehe no yawa @Omoniyi-Adeshola. I’ll definitely read it when it’s posted up.

About exploring all our personal traits, I don’t think it’s a bad idea tho. The darkness we possess inside us is still a part of us, and we can’t run away from ourselves.

@six, I like you…I like how you think…when you get time, make we just yarn…back and forth and all that. I’d love to explore your Id…maybe find some dark places up in your nubby…lol…(i’m sure it’s all lighted up in there like an Hong-Kong night)

  2. Thanks for sharing this one with us but I think dividing the poem into stanzas will help the understanding of the verse.

    Well done fella :)
