Becoming a writer

The first thing you have to do if you want to become a writer is to write.  Dancers dance, singers sing and writers write. The next thing you have to do after that is to call yourself a writer and see yourself as one.  This is important. If you write and see yourself as a writer then you are a writer. Do not wait till you feel you are good enough. No writer is ever good enough.  Do not wait till your writing begins to bring in income; not all writers get paid. Do not wait till you see your writing online or in print, do not even wait for someone else to read your work before you start seeing yourself as a writer. There are professional writers and there are closet writers.  A writer is a person who writes ideas, thoughts and stories somewhere, anywhere, anyhow.

It is when you’ve become a writer that you should begin to consider the kind of writer you are: good or bad, professional or closet.  It is when you are a writer that you can begin to try to improve and worry about the craft. The first step is always the hardest. The first step is to start seeing yourself as a writer.
