I may have written myself off
In disappointment, in despair
I may have felt the shame of being called a never-do-well
Nevertheless, like sun, I’ll shine
Does my brightness upset your darkness?
Why are you encircled with gloom?
Because I’m glittering
Sparkling in my world
Just like seas and oceans
With the assurance of tides
Just like aspirations vaulting high
I’ll shine
Does my sagacity vex you?
Don’t you take my sapience for pride?
Because I laugh like I’m El-sagacious
Obeying the omnipotent effort
You may hit me with your criticisms
You may cut me with your envious eyes
You may shoot me with your ‘sticks and stones’
Nevertheless, like moon, I’ll shine
Does my lean nature perturb you?
Does it come as a bombshell?
That I’ve got the protection of the angels
Always present wherever I go
Out of a life filled with fears
I shine
Up from a past that’s rooted in mistakes
I shine
I’m a locomotive, strong on my track
Speeding and sailing
Leaving behind days with the wrong people
Like star, I shine
Into a future that’s well-defined
I shine
Bringing the gifts that my Maker gave
I inspire and motivate
Blessing my generation with my divine wittedness
I am the Light of the world
I shine
I shine
Er, we call this ‘ilefo’ in Yoruba :p cool piece… rhythmic
Shine on my brother.

Are you familiar with Maya Angelou;s poem, Still i Rise?
Because i am, and this your poem is too close for comfort.
Still I Rise
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
STILL I’M MOVING
You may tear me into shreds
With your razor tongue
And use my blood for Chapman
Before your naked eyes
Still I’m moving
You may kill my dreams
With your selfish bullets
And turn my joy upside down
Like a spirit still I’m moving
Did you say I glow with pride
As if I’ve got all alphabets stored in my palms?
You may crumble my shoulders
Beneath your cruel culture
Wounded still I’m moving
I’m the weaker tree
That shades the world
Empty jug which hold the fruits
That makes you proud
You may say I’m confident
As if I see the future through my nose
Did you say I’m proud
As though I’ve got the solution
Under my feet?
You may block my chances
Of piloting the crew
In guise of your tradition
With pains still I’m moving
I’m a crowned princess
Moving with Divine fuel
Of course I’m glowing with pride
‘Cause higher still I’m moving
