Angels among us

Angels among us

In a world stained by darkness
The angel descends to rest,
Then sets a-float mid-air once more.
As a footstep is to the sand, he leaves a print
etched deep within the palm of your hand-
all the while, dropping traces of gentle winds behind,
as golden wings rise and fall, then rise again
There is no orchestra, but his lips do part
No violin, but subtle sounds escape and produce
heavenly melodies which beckon all of nature’s creations,
Lulling them to a peaceful surrender
Benevolence is his trade, thus with skilful hands he shatters your greatest obstacles
and into meaningless pieces they crumble from sight.
Triumphant, he hands you a divine compass adorned with saintly hope
to guide you along the highway of life
He wears no halo, but his crown is your gratitude
Like the sun it shines warmly now,
with each beam of your smile
Superman and Hercules possess not the strength of our timely hero
For never again will there be another so meticulous in the completion of
A pressing task
Satisfied with his work, the angel plucks a feather,
then dips it in kindness and signs his name
Amazed were you, as he gathered his wings,
then took flight into the open sky and became
a beacon of light
In perfect solitude you sprung into a new horizon
A sweet symphony, echoing softly in your ears- the day you discovered the beauty
of an angel among us.

  1. WOW
this is so beautiful Jane,i see it can be viewed from different angles but i saw it from a spiritual point of view and i felt a sort of serenity while reading it.
    very very good poem.

    1. Exactly what I felt, too. A feeling of great peace and calm, disturbed only by the ‘profane’ references to Superman and Hercules (they had no business being in such a divine work).

Someone could set this to music with lots of violins and gentle keyboards and make a lot of money off it.

  6. Lovely and very beautiful. I agree with Paul that it can mean different things but I think you made it obvious it was spiritual. Words like “golden wings”, “divine” and “saintly hope” point to this but this line “He wears no halo, but his crown is your gratitude” beautifully captured how ‘human’ angels encompass us daily and as well lends credence to the title.

    Well done!

  7. Thank you all for the wonderful feedback. Anderson Paul, i hear you when you say you had a peaceful feeling as you were reading this cause another one of my readers said the exact same thing. I suppose it can be analyzed from different angles and thats the beauty of poetry.
