I started this story that what close to my heart and nobody seems to like it or even read it.Should I finish it for myself and not post it or should I work really hard, post it anyway and take the critics like a martyr fed to the lions? :-)
What do you do when you are in this situation?

Write a couple of parts, send to someone you trust to tell you what you are doing wrong and how you can make it better (Tola Odejayi is perfect for that. He helped me with a novel i’m writing) and continue with the corrections in mind.
Never give up on any story, you can pause for weeks, months or even years, but always go back and write it. Every story deserves that and so does every writer.

If you can defend your story, then keep writing. So long as the story doesn’t break all the rules of grammer then write your thing. Nobody will appreciate your work exactly like you would. I don’t always believe every thing that I’m told by anybody, not to talk of critiques.

In the end, I think it is not about the readers so much as yourself. I totally agree with @Kaycee. If you can agree with your story, if you find fulfilment in your piece, keep posting and continue with it… Post…
IT is possible some people might be too busy to check back…
In all, don’t let no one dictate your pace or taste except you…or if you want, a few trusted colleagues. @Lade, nice one… Encouraging words and I am already stealing the critic too!
E go better with us all jor! :)

    Jef,

If at some point you intend to make the story available to a wider audience, then I would say that you should definitely publish it for people to criticise. Remember, you don’t have to accept all the criticism that people give. And as Lade has said, you can certainly privately ask people for their criticism of your work if you feel that by ‘going public’, you could end up being ‘fed to the lions’.

I will say that it’s difficult for me to criticise novel excerpts when they are discontinuous, as the plot becomes difficult to follow. So if you continue, my suggestion would be not to publish random excerpts.

I feel you on this one Tola.

Err…I am with Tola and Kaycee. My advice? Just make sure it doesn’t break too many rules and then share it to critiques n non-critiques alike. See what they say. Critiques r good for editing purposes, but the non-critiques are a good represntation of the general public, and they can give U an idea of how Ur story wilol do out there. I am not talking about only Family and Friends oh, but mostly those faceless individuals we interact with but have never really met on Social Media as well.
