What about the casting, @jchiemerie? I didn’t even know a movie was in the works. Can you share more info?

Don’t know too. The question is too random.

@TolaO and @Seun, yes, a movie is in the works. It is supposed to have Chiwetelu Ejiofor as Odenigbo, Thandie Newton as Olanna (I thought she would play Kainene; she fits the slim, carefree persona) and one white guy as Richard. Biyi Bandele is to direct it, or something like that….

@Seun-Odukoya, How do you feel about the casting?

LETTER TO CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE: It would have been a chance for Nigerians to get international acclaim, but now it’s down the drain. Thanks to the casting director. Chimamanda, when JK. ROWLINGS WANTED TO GIVE OUT HER SIGNATURE FOR HARRY POTTER TO BECOME A MOVIE, SHE INSISTED THAT ALL THE ACTORS AND ACTRESSES BE BRITISH. I AM QUITE DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS. YOU TAUGHT NIGERIANS TO TELL THEIR OWN STORIES. WHY NOT TEACH THEM TO ACT THEIR OWN STORIES TOO. IT IS QUITE DISCONCERTING THAT FOREIGNERS WHO DID NOT WITNESS THE WAR, WHOSE RELATIVES were not stuffed in a train back to the East after the Kano Massacre, Those WHO DID NOT READ UR FIRST PLAY “For the Love of Biafra”; those who do not share our fears, our weaknesses, our realities are taking over our stories; our world. Is that not part of the Exploitation of Africa? How do you expect Yaya Daccosta or Thandie to speak Igbo? Come to think of it, can they act better than Omotola? I am greatly disturbed. Even though this appears to be a Rejuvenation of African literature, I see it as the DEATH of our growing consciousness. One thing is clear. I will NEVER watch that movie if Thandie or Yaya Dacoosta acts it. I connected with Olanna. I cannot bear seeing foreigners lay claim over one of African’s Greatest stories. It is never going to happen. ONE LOVE

I watch Nollywood movies a lot. Now we have to consider the guys making these movie. They invest money and they have to make their money back. And Chimanda said almost a year ago that she has nothing to do with the film version. She has given the rights to people she trusts them and all that. I am not quite sure and I am not quoting. Will search for that interview and try to post it.

Last King of Scotland had Forrest Whitaker. It got him an Oscar. Slumdog Millionaire actors, think they were based in UK or so. For me it’s nothing new.

I see this as a wake-up call for Nollywood. Let them go adapt Purple Hibiscus and actually make a better movie than those guys would with Half of a Yellow Sun.

We must always understand the filmmaking is business. You need known actors to promote your movie.

I just hope they make the movie in Nigeria to help create employment for our youths rather than going to Ghana or some other African country.

And I just hope the movie turns out good as well.

    I really dont care.

  • Profile picture of Jaywriter Jaywriter (@jaywriter) said 3 months, 3 weeks ago ago:

@Kaycee really? You sure say you no be from another country? Or you dey beef our sweet Amanda?

Well, Kaycee this could be the biggest production ever in Nigeria. Better start caring now.

Why do you not care, @Kaycee?

You’re not a fan of Ms. Adichie?

Or you’re not a movie fan, full stop?

Personally, I would have preferred choosing Purple Hibiscus… I feel that Half of a Yellow Sun is great as a book, but the story line is too dreary for a movie. I guess that HoaYS is probably more ‘epic’ in the eyes of the movie maker.

  • Profile picture of Jaywriter Jaywriter (@jaywriter) said 3 months, 3 weeks ago ago:

@Tola you just made a great point. Personally, both stories are very fantastic. Classics. But on a personal level, I prefer Purple Hibiscus.

They chose Half of a Yellow Sun because the theme and content of the story is/are much more universal.

And I must say, you’re more likely to have Oscar noms with HoaYS than Purple Hibiscus.

HoaYS is also more likely to gross more money.

And who wants to watch a 16 year old lead nowadays, lol.

I agree with @jaywriter on all his points. I’d rather think on what the movie will do for both the literary and movie industry in Nigeria than bother about race.

I think the casting is okay but there is an issue with Olanna’s character. In the book , Olanna is described as “round” – in some way voluptuous. But Thandie Newton ,the actress playing Olanna, is slim , petit.

    Age quod agis!
Quid quid bonum, quid quid pulchrum….dignum lauda est.
This is correct but such would it be to the tongue of a white
speaking in tongues of black. Yet, good is good.

I think we shd look into this more critically.Chimamanda wants d money nd she gets it,irrespective of who plays d roles. She would have insisted on an all Nigerian cast or nothing. We av great actors here dat shd b given d chance esp d unknown ones.My take.

@sambrightomo – It is the producers and directors that determine the cast ,not the novelist or screenwriters. Chimamanda has nothing to do with these technical parts. In fact , she might play a very minimal role in the making of this movie , maybe an external consultant.
