    Hello NS pals

    I am currently indecisive in choosing one of the following, Creative Writing, Comparative Literature and English Literature in my plight to gain a PhD… A PhD has become a required need, if one needs to pursue a career in the academic pathway… Hope to hear from you all… I am seeking advices/opinions here…

    @Julemyles,

    As a true Nigerian, I will answer your questions with questions :)

    1. Which of the three do you enjoy the best? And why do you think you will enjoy it the best?

    2. If all you want is a Ph.D, maybe you should just choose the one that will be easiest to do so you can get your degree with minimal stress?

    3. Are you looking for something that will stretch and challenge you?

    4. Are these the only three options you are considering? If so, why?

    (Bonus question) What’s the difference between Comparative Literature and English Literature? Does CL extend to all languages?

    Comparative Literature compares various literature, cultures, languages… It is broad. Can compare films to books… Can compare two novels from various cultures… I have an interest here because I feel I would want to do a comparative research on two authors I respect in life and this would not only improve my learning as a writer but give me a wide knowledge gained from the experiences of these writers…

    On English literature, this is purely on the novel, prose or drama thing… Some said it gave birth to Creative writing and it’s still the bench mark for any novelist or poet… I am currently on a masters of creative writing and would like to switch to this and not just continue in the same line….

    On creative writing or English Literature… which one I like better… It is like answering this question: reading or writing, which do you enjoy more… Difficult… I enjoy reading more but would desire to accomplish goals in writing….

    I appreciate your anticipated advice Mr @TolaO

    CL extend to two or three languages… It depends… And that’s my fear.. Mr @TolaO

    Does comparative literature always have to do with more than a language? I think you can get to compare different cultures… For instance, Shakespeare and Ekwuazi… ;)
    I think you have now limited everything to CL and EL…abi?

    I would suggest that you do Comparative Literature. Why? It broadens your perspective and is really fun. I wrote some PhD proposals and analysis for some friends on this and I really think it makes lots of sense. Maybe I haven’t explored EL well but for the time being, I think CL would be great.

    I would still be talking to professors of the various departments to weigh my options…

    For me, it’s not about choosing the one you like best, but going for the best out of the various departments that are able to grant you the admissions… So I would apply for all three… lol

    @Julemyles,

    You didn’t really answer my questions directly; in fact, funnily enough, you gave the most detailed answer to the bonus question.

    However, this is what I discern from the answer you gave.

    You say that you want to “improve your learning as a writer” and gain “a wide knowledge” from “the experiences of [other] writers”.

    You also speak about “goals” that you would like to accomplish in writing, even though you like reading. The sense I get here is that reading has your heart (what you enjoy), but writing has your head (i.e. it is what you believe you should do).

    It would have been nice to hear explicitly from you why you want to switch from Creative Writing to English Literature… I’m guessing that you believe that since English Literature is the ‘father’ of Creative Writing, you can get even more from switching to EL.

    From my discernings above, it looks like you should go for the CL course, because you believe it will help you in what I believe is your desire to become a better writer. I don’t know whether there is the option of doing major-minor degrees, or whether you can take courses that are offered in one program as an elective in another; if so, I would say major in CL and minor in EL, or do the CL course and take lots of EL electives.

    But of course, this incomplete advice, since I don’t have all the answers to my questions. What you should REALLY do is to lock yourself in a dark cupboard where nobody can see you and ponder those questions privately… the answers you come up with will help you make a decision.
