What my Father said in May

What my Father said in May

Zulayka! Don’t love when you don’t mean to
Take decisions when you’re still a girl
and be careful not to take the wrongs,
When this land proves you wrong, right them
Tell them what you love,
The moan of two ladies in a room,
The taste you miss in her absence
and the regret that lingers on your face when you let her return early.
Crowds here are mocking birds,
Their song deceives the ear
and when you listen keenly,
It brings hot waves to your throat.
The sore does not linger for a day,
The burns itch forever
So, Zulayka! When you see birds hover in a market place,
Run as fast as you can
That city detest people like you,
People of good love foreign to their ears
Run from there and when you are woman enough,
Tell them these words I said in may
