The smell of cigarettes filled the room, Sade coughed severally. Her abductors were chattering over a game of chess. They took advantage of her times without number, she often passes out but it doesn’t stop them from satisfying their needs. She didn’t know how long she has been there but each day she thanked God and prayed for a miracle. Yelwa probably gave them the order to kill me already; I wonder why they are slow about it. She thought to herself. If death comes, I will wholeheartedly welcome it, if not….only God can decide. She sighed.
“Mr Bualoga?” She heard their gang leader speak into the phone. She jerked up, listening to his conversation. “What is Sade Lomo’s worth to you?” he asked. Tears streamed down her face, Yelwa wants to exhort money from her husband through the abduction.
“I know you got lots of money to throw around, but I don’t need it, I am not a ravenous person.” Sade rolled her eyes. Your words don’t match your action. She was careful not to let the words out. “Do not hurt her.” Clem pleaded.
Yelwa can’t win this war. She thought to herself and lay down quietly on the bed. “You will hear from me” the abductor said and ended the call, turning to Sade he continued. “We will get ransom money and still kill you”. She wasn’t surprised, typical Yelwa in action.
Clem isn’t getting any closer to finding Sade and he is tensed by the minute, Sade’s mother Tola has been breathing down his neck since she was released. He had hoped the abductor would call and demand ransom money. He was fast running out of options, he could have his people searching for her but he couldn’t risk her life like last time and mess things up.
He glanced at Tola who was crying her eyes out. He lowered his head unto his hand, he didn’t know how much longer he could sit around doing nothing, they could be hurting her or…..he shook his head dismissing the horrible thought. He can’t think of death in the situation. Vanessa Bualoga sister of Clem walked in, she’d wear a long grieved face since she was told of the Lomos’ mishap.
“Why haven’t we been updated Mr Bualoga?” Vanessa asked sarcastically. Clem didn’t answer. He kept thinking about Sade, her current state, is she hurt? “I could end all these tears, endless thoughts and pains if only…..” Vanessa turned to Tola. She got her attention. “If only he can admit he failed.”
Clem shot out of his seat immediately. Anger grew in him rapidly. He had promised to keep Sade safe but he failed now, she is taking advantage of it. “Forget it” he spat angrily. “We should be pulling all resource towards finding her not talk about some dumb stupid promise”
Vanessa sprang up also. “Forget it?” She barked, in a split second, she burst out laughing, a bitter angry laugh. “She was abducted right under your nose” she paused briefly. “I will graciously come to your rescue, but first I have an aged long score to settle” she said scrambling away. Tola looked at her as she left, confused about her last statement. “We don’t want a murder in the resort” he yelled.
Clem’s stomach groused. He hadn’t had any decent meal in days, he didn’t have the guts to stomach anything while he had a mess to clean up. He wondered what would happen to her when she shows up, the police suspect her for Dina’s murder and has evidence of it. Her problems never seem to end.
Granny stared out the window lost in thoughts. She didn’t hear her grandson Doctor Jared come in, he went straight to her and hugged her. She jerked out of her thoughts. He gave her a blank stare, she knew what it meant, and she turned her gaze out the window.
“Are you feigning ignorance right now?” he asked dryly. Granny gave no reply. He ran a hand through his hair in frustration, he paced a little. Clinging his fists, he went inside and returned shortly.
“Jared” he stopped in his tracks. “We can’t do anything till we get word from Vanessa” he wanted to scream at her, say some nasty harsh words, instead he kept his cool. Though the delay was costing a life, he didn’t want to get into an argument. “….and Vanessa is waiting for a clear cloud before rescuing Sade? Why haven’t Clem done anything?”
“Few more days” Granny pleaded. Jared stared at her in disgust. “Few more days!” he roared. Granny understood his anger, waiting for permission to rescue Sade could be futile but it is also important Vanessa sorts out things so her rescue won’t draw unwanted attention. She has always rescued Sade from Yelwa’s claws and made it seem like it was a miraculous rescue or Vanessa’s effort. Granny always helped because she had old scores to settle with Yelwa and Sade was playing a huge part in it oblivious to her. How does she make him understand? “She will be rescued, his son-“
“It has always been about him, It has always been the heir of the Bualogas wealth. I am tired of hearing this crap, you rescue her or I will” he said holding her gaze. Granny ignored his words, she addressed his anger.
“Do not forget you have the Bualoga blood running through your veins” she retorted. He chuckled. “Where has that brought me? Living estranged with my grandmother, while they build a fortune and destroy lives because of him. Between him and his mother, I don’t know whom I despise more” with that, he stormed out. Leaving Granny heartbroken.
Sade shivered on the old rusty dong bed. Her teeth chattering from the cold, they weren’t bothered. The t-shirt she wore earlier was ripped apart though she spread herself thin for them. She does not struggle or fight back, but they always hurt her, ripping her soul out of her body. The sun was setting gradually, the window near the bed was the only source of fresh air and light in the room. She saw a shadow, she tilted her head for a better view. She saw him in shorts. She swallowed painfully.
She felt strong nausea despite being hungry, the unpleasant smell of alcohol and cigarettes oozing from him stirred up trouble in her stomach. Without warning, she threw up, spilling some on him. He landed heavy blows on her fragile body. Satisfied with the beating, pulled her down and raped her. Happy thoughts, she reminded herself then closed her eyes.
“Yelwa!” Vanessa yelled rudely storming into her office. Yelwa sighs dramatically, she’d barely settled down. “Where is she?” she ignored her and proceed to sort out papers on her desk. “I’m not your husband who has everything to lose and won’t touch you, two can play the game you know, ” Vanessa said plopping into a chair. “Am I supposed to be scared?” she asked with a blank face.
Vanessa giggled. “No, but it was meant to tell you how insane I can be”. It was her turn to laugh. “Two can play indeed. I don’t know the she’you are referring to.” She told her putting air quotes on she. She continued. “If perhaps I know a certain she, I am your only means to her survival”.
“I know” she paused. She walked the short distance to her side of the table. “You are the only means to Sade survival hence my brother is being patient with you. Guess what? I am not Clem Bualoga, I can do this-” without caveat, Vanessa slapped Yelwa hard. “That’s for being an asshole and bitch” she gave her a harder strike on the exact spot the first landed. “That’s for disrespecting the Bualogas’” Vanessa smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes. “This is going to hurt more” She punched her right in the face. She rubbed off the pain in knuckles.
“I always wanted to do that” she went back to her seat and stared at her waiting for her to recover from the heavy blow and slaps. Yelwa’s face redden, she was fuming with anger. Her face obviously hurt. “I know you won’t spill so easily,” Vanessa said bluntly.
“I will find Sade I promise” she stood up to leave when Yelwa spoke. “The Bualogas’ and their promises, how is that treating you? Look where you end up, a missing Sade, a depressed Tola and Yemi, a distress Clem, a crazy Vanessa, a love stricken heir” She had a mock horror expression on her face. “You forgot to add Yelwa, an asshole and bitch to the list.” She quickly added. “In the midst of this chaos, he told me he’s divorcing you”.
Yelwa grimaced. “You don’t know how happy I am, it sparkled up a bright light in this sad moment” she idly searched for nothing, in particular, she just wanted to shut out her words. “I know why he is still allowing you savour your last moments” she continued. “He wants Sade back before throwing you out, he has to defeat you-“ she shook her head. “Sade has to defeat you” she corrected herself.
“I have already won, just delaying the party waggon till Henry gets here” Yelwa spoke nonchalantly. “You really believe you have won?” she stopped for a moment to think. “You’re more delusional than I thought” She stood up with a gamed face. She has to stop her ranting and the Sade search committee. “You’re so blind you just can’t see it. Look around you, it’s over, I won. My son will be home any minute”
The silence lingered. Vanessa put a lid on her emotions. She looked at her, she looked beyond her hate, rage, and horrid being. She saw right through her. Yelwa is nothing short of a spiteful nasty woman who would use her son as a means to her selfish gains and crushing anyone who dared stood in her way.
“Don’t you feel terrible using your son for your selfish goals?” Yelwa scoffed. “I toiled hard to make this resort what it is today but I was sidelined and my son took everything thanks to your father Vanessa.” Vanessa shook her head in pity. “Do not give me that look. I was never recognised, never appreciated, never compensated. Henry gets all the Bualogas wealth and me?” Yelwa barked.
Vanessa merely watched her. How brutal can a mother be? To get the Bualogas wealth, she needs Henry but has to get rid of Sade who won’t let her have it all. She heard her speak. “My son is obsessed with Sade who has proven to be a cat with nine lives. I will do anything to get rid of her”
Yemi sat in the fourth row of the chapel, he has been spending lots of quiet moments there praying his sister returns in one piece. His mother found him sitting alone after a long search in the resort. She knows why he chose the chapel. Sade always had her quiet moments here, it rubbed off on him. “I miss her”
She wrapped her arms around him, gently squeezing him. They all miss her. “I miss her too” she muttered. “She will be alright, she come back to us. She has to” They were mute, allowing the silence to linger.
“Any news?” Sophia asked Laura in restaurant. She had asked to see her privately, she couldn’t risk being seen by the Bualogas. Laura gave her a numb look. Sophia lowered her head, several thoughts raced her mind. Yelwa is behind everything but she can’t take any action against her, she could end up dead. She is already at risk because Laura knows the truth but nothing has been done. “Why is she still roaming about freely?” she whispered.
“You do know Yelwa will hunt you down right?” Sophia sighed. She knew she will be hunted. Was she scared? Yes, will she run? No, does she have anything to lose? Lots to lose. “Why haven’t she come after me?” Laura chuckled.
Her confidence is intriguing, stepping up to the challenge is a foolish step. She will be crushed before she makes the first move. “Perhaps she wants you to be confident enough to face her then she unfolds her plan. Do not make the mistake of sticking around till Henry returns, you won’t survive” a slow smile replaced Sophia’s contorted face. Henry could be a motivation to fight back, she had always set her eyes on him. Now was her chance to act, with Sade gone, she has the advantage.
“What is going through that head of yours?” Laura asked abruptly. She was mute. “Are you thinking what I think you are? You will definitely be crushed. Vanessa Bualoga should not find out you are interested in her nephew” Vanessa pulled out a chair and sat almost immediately. “What should I not find out?” Vanessa asked, excitement and mischief written all over her. Sophia and Laura looked at her aghasted.
Clem’s phone rang. He picked it up in a split second, hitting the green button immediately. Heavy breathing was heard in the other end of the end. “Mr Bualoga, I think she is more useful to me than she is to you, you can’t begin to fathom it.”
Anger sprang up in him, why won’t he ask for ransom already? “Do not hurt her” he said through gritted teeth. “Does rape count as hurt?” He asked laughing. “I will find you. I will mutilate you bit by bit, slowly, till you beg to die even then I won’t spare you” he laughed even louder. “Make ready 50 thousand and wait for my call” the line went dead.
“50 thousand?” Clem asked with uncertainty etched in his voice
