Boom! Boom!

Boom! Boom!

Boom! Boom!

D’you hear that?

That’s the sound of my heart beating.

She’s killed him, I know.
I heard something heavy hit the floor, just before another glass crashed
And I know it’s him.

She told me there’s something she must do if we are to escape him.
I don’t mind,
Really.
I just don’t want to see him again.
He hits mama and makes her cry

Last year, when I was four, we stayed in the hospital because he’d hit her again.
I knew she only went to the hospital to see how my baby brother was doing,
She always took me with her.
She’d told to me that I couldn’t see him yet because he was in her tummy.

My baby brother.

But I knew she didn’t spend that day in the hospital because of the baby and when we’d come home with the evil man, she was sadder and bruised and once, I heard her telling grandma that she’d lost the baby.

My baby brother
Gone!
And it’s all because of him
Because of that evil man.

I hate him,
He’s not my daddy.
Mama says I shouldn’t say that
But he hurts her so much
And makes her cry
Then he smiles evilly at me
And says bad things.

But it’s over now
Mama has prepared my bags and we’ld be leaving him.
She says she has to do just one thing if we are to truly escape him.
She didn’t tell me what, but just before he came home, she told me to hide in the closet, in my room.

But it’s taking long
Mama was supposed to fetch me after.
We’ld travel around the world and be free of him.

Why isn’t she here?
Mama, mama….
Can I come out now?

Wait, wait
I hear the sound of footsteps
It sounds heavy
And it’s coming closer.
Not like Mama’s!

No, no, it can’t be.

Boom! Boom!

D’you hear that?

That’s the sound of my heart breaking.

  1. Wow, wow. I was scared right until the end… only to find out my fears were not without merit.

  2. Thanks Chandelier!
It’s especially hard knowing that things like that happen almost everyday, all over the world, leaving their kids with trauma, emotionally, psychologically, sometimes even physically.
