If Only I Knew- Episode 3

Segun couldn’t believes his ears. He leaned forward. “What did you just say? Did i hear you say..”

“Yes please. And if you care to know, it’s over between us. It’s over.” I turned my face away from him. It was an opportunity I have been looking for, there is turning back.

Segun stared at me silently for a very long moment, while I stood beside the open window staring at the brightness of the full moon. I knew how much he was hunt by my words but it didn’t bother me at all. Finally, He shook his head slowly and walked out of my room. I let out a sigh of relief, sat gently on the edge of the bed and pushed away the touch of guilt that nagged at the back of my mind.

A knock on my door woke me up the following morning. I glanced at my watch, it was 7:25am. Who could that be? I pulled myself up from bed, walked towards the door and pulled it opened. it was Juliet, my best friend.

“Enjoyment.” Juliet walked in with soft smile.  “So you’re still sleeping at this time of the day.”

I gave her a weak smile and closed the door gently. “I got very tired last night before i slept.” My voice held no emotion. “What brought you so early? You’re not a girl of surprise.”

Juliet sat down in only chair in my room and met my eyes.”Segun called me last night. What happened between both of you?”

The brightness of the morning Sun streamed through the window as I pulled it open. “Is that the reason why you came?” I sighed. “Don’t mind him jare.”

“He told me you want to breakup with him. Why?”

I heaved a heavy sigh and sat down gently. “Is it not too early to be talking about Segun.” My voice was very soft “Look, forget about Segun jare. I have told him my mind and nothing can change it. I just can’t continue with him.”

Juliet stared at me with her mouth wide opened. “Abigail? Wait wait wait, what has gone into you? You can’t continue with segun or what did you just say?”

“Let’s forget about Segun and talk something else abeg.” I said.

Juliet stared at me for few seconds. “Don’t tell me it’s because of that man I saw you with the other time?”

It took me few seconds before I answered.  “Juliet. Do you want my happiness?”

“You know I do.”

“Good. I’m happy with John. Ok? John is the man I want. And I can’t let Segun spoil my chances with John.”

Juliet burst out laughing. “Abigail you made me laugh.” She leaned forward in her chair. “How could you just decide to break a five years relationship, filled with so much love just because of one man you just met? No no no Abigail this not you.”

“I’m not a fool you know?”

“Yes I know. But how could you be so sure about him? Abigail?”

“There is no need to argue about this Juliet. It’s my life, and I know what is best for me. Segun is not serious, and he is not ready to change. Ore (friend) forget about him Jo.”

Juliet drew herself up to her full and let out a long hard breath. “I will you tell you how to live your life but I will advise you to reconsider your action.” She strode towards the door, pulled it open, then stopped and turned. “I won’t be happy if you breakup with Segun.” She stepped out of my room shutting the door behind her.

A month later. John held my arm as we were walking along the street of London. It was the most happiest day of my life. Since I was born I have never been out of Nigeria, seeing myself in London with
John, was a dream come true.

“Excuse me.” John stopped a white lady that was walking along the street and handed her a small camera to help snap us a photograph.

The lady collected the camera with a beautiful smile. “Ready?” She asked.

John put his arms around me, while I rested my head on his chest, smiling. After the picture was taken, he collected back the camera. “Thanks.” He said, while the white lady smiled in reply and walked away.

Few minutes later. We walked into a coffee shop along the street. “Take a seat. I’ll go get some coffee.” John said.

I sat down gently staring around the coffee shop. John returned a few minutes later with two cups of coffee. “Here you go.” He said and handed me a cup of hot coffee.

I set the cup on the table. “Thanks.” I took off the lid to let it cool. I met his eyes with a sweet smile. “I’m really happy to be here with you.” I said and leaned back in my chair, staring at his handsome face.

John lifted his cup of coffee to his lips and took a sip. “I should be the one saying that. Having you here by my side makes me very happy.” He leaned back in his chair. “I have a gift for you.”

My smile widened. “Gift?

“Yes. Guess?” He said.

“Hmmm…..I don’t know Jo.”. I smiled happily.

He put his arm into his jacket pocket and brought out his arm, closed. “I bought this for you the last time I traveled to Paris.” He smiled, still closing his arm. “I know you would like it.” He opened his hand,

“Oh…my God.” I met his gaze and back to his arm. “This is beautiful…” I took the diamond necklace from his arm. “Thank you so much honey.”

“Anything for you love.” He smiled and took a sip from his cup of coffee.

I was so excited.

  2. It’s too good to be true

    1. @GereOchuko Thanks for dropping by.

  3. @silvadereal nice story continuing from where you stopped.
Did you write in a hurry though? You missed a couple of punctuation and I assume Julie meant to say “…I will NOT tell you how to live…”.
Looking forward to how it plays out, hope there’s a twist, good or bad. Cheers

  4. @aplusn It wasn’t written in a hurry though, you just can’t do pass them at times. *smiles*

    Thanks for your comment.

    1. @phil Thanks for reading.

  6. Good one. I did love the early parts of the story but I must admit the narration at the latter parts didn’t look much creative. You can still do much better, you have my trust.

    Well done.

  7. John’s love seems too clichéd to last. I really pity Abigail o. And as aplusn said there were some typos. But all in all it was a good one. Well done.
