I took quick glance at the wall clock and settled down in my sitting room, waiting patiently for John who had promised to take me out for lunch. I grabbed my ringing phone off the small table behind me, fully expecting it to be John checking to know if I’m ready. The number that came up was Segun’s number. I hissed and dropped the cell phone back on the table.
Few minutes later, i picked up the chipping phone with joy the moment John’s number appeared on my phone screen, calling from his car on the street in front of my house. I hurried out of my single room apartment with excitement and joined him in his car.
“Sorry I came late.” He apologise with a soft smile that made him look more handsome.
“It’s alright.” I smiled, and gave him a kiss on his parted lips.
After we settled in a restaurant and ordered a meal. John met my eyes with a lazy smile. “I will be traveling to London next month.” He took a full spoon of fried rice into his mouth. “For holiday.”
“Really? Ooh…I’m going to miss you.” I said.
He smiled. “Would you like to come?” He lifted a glass of water to his lips and set it back on the table. “I will be happy to have you by my side.”
The corner of my lips curled up with a smile. “I will be very happy to go with you.” I said.
He nodded, smiling. “That’s my baby….. Okay then, you and I are going to have a great fun in London.”
My eyes widened in excitement. “You don’t mean it, do you?”.
“Sure,” he said. “I’m taking you along with me.”
Something too far to be a butterfly leapt in my stomach. London! Oh my God! “Thank you so much honey.” I was so excited. I leaned forward and planted a kiss on his lips.
I stared at him silently for a very long moment, feeling very happy to have him. He is a perfect gentleman. He knows how to make me happy, wanting only what I wanted. From the very first day I started going out with him, he has showed me so much love, doing things that Segun has not been able to do.
John brought me home about 9:45pm after a long drive from Lekki. “Thanks dear.” I kissed him and got down from his car.
“Alright beauty, see you tomorrow.” He said, while I watched him driving off.
“Good night.” I waved at him and turned, heading for my apartment.
I turned toward the familiar voice in dull shock, staring at Segun who stood with his arms crossed over his chest. He smiled weakly and took a step forward, stopping with less than a foot between us.”Where you coming from?” He pushed his hands into his trouser pocket and met my eyes. “And who is that man that brought you home?” Segun asked, staring at me with a frown.
I pulled my gaze away from him, not knowing what to say. “That man?”
“You heard me.” Segun said.
I held my gaze as I searched for words. “He’s just a friend.”
Segun narrowed his eyes in annoyance. “Abigail?”
“What?” I met his gaze with a frown and crossed my arms over my chest.
Segun looked partly mortified and partly angry, but mostly he just looked like he didn’t know what to say. “How many times have I called you today?” He asked. “Why didn’t you pick the call?”
“I forgot my phone at home.” I lied.
He shook his head and sighed. “Where are you coming from?” He asked with his eyes fixed on mine. “I’m asking….”
“Pleassse!” I snapped. “Don’t I have the right to live my life? Do I have to take permission from you before going out?” I hissed and turned, heading for my apartment.
Segun followed me. “I cant believe you’re doing this to me.” He said as he stepped into my room.
“Doing what?” I turned to face him. “How do you mean?”
“Who do you think I am? A fool or what?” Barely controlled anger harden his words. “Abigail?”
“Enough of this nonsense.” Annoyance swept through me. “For Christ sake Segun, what’s all this?”
He narrowed his eyes in disbelief. “Are you shouting on me?
“How dare you accused me of……”
“I’m not blind.” He snapped. “You’ve been going out with another man and you are….”
“Stop it.” I yelled at him.
“You think I don’t know? Abigail?” He took a step forward. “For how long have you been cheating on me?” He asked, while Keeping his voice low.
“Look, I don’t have time for all this nonsense,” I met his eyes. “Now that you know I’m cheating on you, why don’t you just end this relationship.” I shot the words at him like an arrow unerring and straight for the target.
Disbelief coloured his eyes. “Abigail?”
