The sun drifted low in the sky. Lara glanced at her watch. “It’s getting late Nkechi.” She blew out a long breath. ”Standing here will not solve the problem.”
I stood unmoving, crossing my arms over my chest. “I don’t know what to do Lara.” I shook my head and turned my gaze away. “I don’t think i can hide this from Emeka.” I turned my gaze back at Lara. “I will have to tell him. He deserve that much.”
Lara stared at me with a gaze steady and firm. “I will advice you to keep this to yourself.” She said in a low tone. “If you want to keep your marriage, and have a child. You will have to fight this battle alone.” She paused, waiting for me to say something. Instead, i nodded in silent agreement.
(A little after midnight)
“Emeka please don’t do this to me.”
“Get out of my house.” Emeka yelled. “I don’t ever want to set my eyes on you again.”
“Honey please don’t do this to me, i beg you.” I was crying. “Please forgive me.”
‘”Get out of my house.” He yelled.
I snapped my eyes opened. “Jesus.” My voice jerked Emeka from sleep.
“Sweetie.” Fear grips him. “Are you ok?”
“I…..I had a bad dream.” I blew out a long breath.
Emeka stared at and sighed. “It’s ok dear, it’s an ordinary dream.” He put his arm on my shoulder. “Go back to sleep.”
I woke up to the morning sun streaming through the window. I pulled myself up and advance into the living room.
“Morning sweetie.” Emeka smiled, and stood up. “Feeling good, rite?”
“I’m already late, i need to be going.” He kissed lightly on my cheek. “I love you.”
“I love you too honey.” I forced a smile against it. “Honey there is something i will like to tell you.”
“Really?” He picked up his car key from the center table. “We will talk about it later sweetie.” He said with a soft smile. “I have an appointment to catch up with.”
“Talk later sweetie.” He said, and hurried out of the living room
I blinked against the bright sunlight as i came down from my car, parked against a knot of cars beside Lara’s supermarket.
“Ieave me alone.” Lara voice rose with anger.
“Lara whats the problem?” I asked.
“See this man o.” She struggled to keep the anger out of her voice. “I say i no do, na by force?”
I glared at the gentleman standing in front of Lara. He returned my stare with a smile, and walked out of the supermarket.
“Why are you so hard on him.” I leaned forward and sat down. ”Lara take it easy o.”
“Na by force?” She hissed.
“Do you want to remain single all your life?”
“I’m better off.” Lara snapped. “I’m not looking for love.” She settled beside me. ”I don’t Believe in love.”
“Everyone believe in love Lara.”
“Not in my case.” She waved a disgusted hand.
“Fine. I’ve experienced that unstable emotion on a number of occasions. Every single time i offer my heart to some man, he crushes it.”
“Everyone’s heart’s been broken Lara,” I Paused. “You know, the emotional equivalent of no pain, no gain.”
“Ok i hear you.” Lara laughed and stood up. “I hope you’re following baba’s instruction?”
“Not yet.” I sighed
Lara stared at me for a long moment. “There is no time to waste Nkechi.”
“I know, but i can’t do it.” I turned my gaze away.
Lara sighed. “Don’t you want to have a child? I do wish you reconsider my dear. There….”
“I’m not going to change my mind.”
“You have no choice Nkechi.” Lara shook her head. “You need to be strong.”
I pulled myself to my feet. Right inside me, i knew i have no choice.
