If I Do No Good Today

When I lay me down to sleep
Those sleep so profound and deep
When my eyes are shut for life
And I, done with earthly strife
Will men tarry to merry
With faces spelling teary?

When my relatives and friends
My accomplishments and deeds
will start with me a journey
The last, making the journey
Will some people paint me black
When I am not of that stroke?

When upon my grave they cry
To see me the Last Road ply
Will their eyes and hearts agree
When death comes to set me free
From this bittersweet wild world
Which words will they wear my world?

Will men’s bucal cavities
Create great tunes laced with fat lies
Recounting ear sweetening tales
Of how great I fared this place
When their mind, body and soul
Casts aspersions on my trail?

But I neeed not bother my head
For in the land of the dead
Nothing will reach me again
But what do I stand to gain
If I do no good today
And doom my soul all the way?

  1. Its intense, we all must die some day.
You’ve rightly said “what do I stand to gain if I do no good today and doom my soul all the way”
    I love that part.

  2. This is a good reminder to Do Good Alwaz cos that’s the only thing that truly outlives a man as a Good Name is better than riches…Great piece @EnigmatikPoet

  3. @kosnie @ameenaedrees thanks for reading and commenting.

  4. whatever you do will follow you wherever you go. whether good or otherwise. IT IS GOOD TO BE GOOD.

  5. True @shovey, thanks for coming.

  6. I like.
    Especially the part about
‘For in the land of the dead
    Nothing will reach me again’
For once we’re dead,we never have to worry about people’s opinions on our lives again

  7. This reminds me of the saying which says that if you do good, you do for yourself; and if you do bad, you do for yourself.

    This is good, @enigmatikpoet :)

    1. @EnigmatikPoet, U’re welcome….inviting you, @charla to check out my story at http://www.naijastories.com/2014/11/ghost-annabelle-episode-ten/ and comment, good or bad.

  8. The first thing I noticed is the picture it’s hilarious which is actually the opposite of the poem I has to laugh at that. This poems flow for me was sweet and really easy to read and visualize. Death is that great mystery that we spend our lives trying to unravel to understand and defeat and in the end we all lose for death is truly absolute and this poem addresses one of many perceptions that we all wonder about. We’ll done @enigmatikpoet

  9. The reflection of death and one’s passing is usually something many never want to talk about. This poem lays down a lot of food for thought and thus makes one realise the need to make both positive impact for today and tomorrow…

    Nice depth and reasoning
