Dear Sam Bright Omo

I was surfing through the NS slush pile when I saw it. I froze. It was mid-morning, i needed to eat, dress up and drive fifty miles to my day job, but at that moment none of that mattered . All that mattered were the words on my computer screen or was I imagining them? I read them again slowly, i blinked and rubbed my eyes. They were still there, two words, first letters in capitals–Nicole Bassey. My heart began to race, my breaths slowed down and i shivered. This was strange stuff.

I was flattered, no , amazed and for once I couldn’t think of the right thing to say, the right thing to write, the right thing to think.

Then came the wait. As the posting queue slithered like a pregnant snail, i mentally switched off. It would come some day, I told myself. I wondered what it would say and if I would like it. The tags were enchanting : Africa, eagle, woman, beauty, hope, life, sunshine…

Then it was posted. A poem, Nicole Bassey. For the first time in my life someone wrote a poem about me and published it! I was humbled and speechless, nothing i could say would truly express my acceptance, for in many ways it was an apology. Once a few weeks ago we had locked swords on a phrase in the popular Water Palaver series. I offered a correction , he refused it. I unwisely alluded to it in the next edition. He erupted spewing words meant to wound and to silence. I was hurt, deeply so. In that instant i swore to stay away , faraway. Surprisingly he wouldn’t let me, he wrote an apology on the post and echoed it thrice. I thawed a bit, but not completely. My people say, snakebite survivors dread curved sticks. I had been bitten once and for me once was more than enough.
Then he wrote a poem . And not just any poem, an ode so beautiful and heart warming that it made all that read it marvel. A celebration of warmth and compassion, industry and beauty, courage and wit so powerful and touching that it made me melt. It licked up all the ice in me and i felt my legs give way…

So I sat
And read the poem again,
I inhaled its fragrance,
Its lush words that
Filled my aching spaces
With the scent of approval
And
Consolation.

I sought words with which to respond.
I found none.

Until now

Dear Sam Bright,
I have found my tongue,
I accept your poem,
Your mistitled epic ode
Written for a goddess , a princess or a queen,
of which
I can but yearn,
To be,
But most of all i accept your
Galant spirit,
Unafraid to love or hate
And brave enough to say it,
Able to shake off the fake,
To discard all pretense,
To amaze with the sheer passion
Of your pursuit,
Of your gaze,
Looking into my soul
Yet unwilling
To blink or look away
I salute you
In your inimitable
Boldness
Your wit
Your laugh, your kindness
An uncanny ability to look
Beyond the chaos
To the paradise that can be
I accept, Sam Bright
And i hope that
From now we can
Somehow
Accept each other too
Not just us
But the entire Ns family
And Nigeria
And the world.
For where there are people
There will be differences
Where there are atoms
They will collide,
But doesn’t matter,
What matters is making up,
Letting go,
Looking for the good
In each other
What matters is
Learning to love,
And to forgive.

Bravo! Such grace, such warmth as promotes peace and community. I have had poems written for me before, albeit delivered in private but none has moved me to such eloquence ever before.

  16. Me thinks some people should concentrate on improving their writing and leave mumuness well alone.

    1. @kaycee, now what exactly is your definition of mumuness? From whence dost it begin to be extracted in this piece?

  17. @nicolebassey and @sambrightomo, this is so sweet. You have used your art to mend your hearts. Let this be the start of a true friendship *winks*.

  18. Sorry for commenting this late.
