Winners Announced for Best Short Story Contest

Winners Announced for Best Short Story Contest

Finally, the Best Short Story Contest is concluded. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in this writing contest, and especially to Chika Unigwe, our sponsor and chief judge. We also appreciate the time and effort on the part of the editors on the NS team, as well as the writers who submitted stories, and those who read, commented and voted for their favorites.

Like already stated, only the stories in the editors shortlist + Polls were forwarded to Chika Unigwe to select her top 3 favorites. All entries were eligible for the public choice awards and the 2 winners are based entirely on the outcome of the star ratings on each story page. The winners in order from the top are as follows;

First Prize of $200 – Raymond Elenwoke with Eater.

Chika Unigwe says “The story sucks you right in from the very first paragraph, and it is impossible to stop reading until you have figured out what is going on. My absolute favorite.”

Runner up Prize of $100 – Olubunmi Adesuwa with One of Us

Runner up Prize of $50 – Idi Ace with Stained: Sheets and Porcelain

Public choice Award $25 – The Watchers by Joshua Segun-Lean

Public Choice Award $25 – The Lizard has grown Hairs by Olachi Nwaozuzu-Ekechukwu

All winners should contact admin@naijastories.com to collect their prizes. Thanks everyone!

  7. Congrats to all the winners!

  8. I thought @olubunmi-adesuwa‘s entry stood out in terms of plot and denouement, as well as the unique second person narrative, but, apparently, Chika loved the brilliant writing we all have come to know @raymond for. This again brings the literary debate: which is more important, plot or good writing? In terms of plot, ‘Eater’ isn’t fresh, several horror movies and books have exploited the plot, but, give it to my musketeer extraordinaire, Raymond, the guy can write, walahi! He has been able to rewrite a seemingly common plot in such a way that one is tempted to think he was the first to tell this kinda story!

    Well done Chika, I cant fault the top three, really, they were the best of the shortlist.
    So Baba Ray, where the beer gonna happen na? @raymond, answer me o! ehn ehn!

    @banky, my brother I feel U. I guess that is one of the greatest challenges for ANY horror writer; finding something new in a genre that has been plagued by mediocrity…
    As for beer, well I only take Fanta >_< . U go drink?

    1. Hmmnnn…I guess you are right.

      Fan-kini? Surely you dont expect me to come to that level, do you? And by the way, its not compulsory you take the beer na, just arrange, chikena!
