The Intelligent Courteous Dog

The rains this year have been relentless
Half the city submerged, the other half drowned
It goes without saying, the roads are impassable
Hideous makeshift pass way springing up
As fast as the maker(s) can make them
The right of way always been contested
Impatient and angry pedestrians
Always seen in one altercation or another
Naughty ill mannered kids
Brushing aside senior citizens
To lay claim to the right of way
So it was that the dog approached from the north
The septuagenarian from the south
Both got to the entrance from opposite ends
At the same time
A remarkable thing happened
The dog took a step back, waited patiently
Yielding the right of way to the septuagenarian
As the old lady drew alongside the dog
She could have sworn the dog nodded in greetings
Uhh! Who knew!!
If only men could be more doglike.!
