OUR WORLD OF SOCIAL NETWORKS -PART 1

Since the advent of social networks in the likes of face book, twitter, pinterest, 2go, eskimi, face party, just to mention but a few, the craze for browsing has increased beyond human explanation, thus making one to wonder about the cause of this ugly menace or that it is a trend associated with a supernatural force…. Well, no one has the exact answer to this mystery.

Yes, I know that many out there would have started to buckle up, to challenge me, because they might have probably perceived my direction. Okay, without much- much, I agree that the world of social networks has brought about a lot of interesting and exciting things into our own world, such that keeps us busy and happy at the same time, no doubt about that.

But to the truth of the matter, social networks has brought about too many anomalies into human life and activities, therefore inflicting several troubles and problems to most important departments of our life. And such troubles and problems may include; distraction, procrastination, lackluster performance, lateness, lack of concentration, forgetfulness, divided attention, just to mention but a few. I know someone out there may just say “how do all these things you mention affect me?” Yes, you might have not known until now, how all this things affects your life in one way or the other negatively. Let me tell you something, a person whom is addicted to any of these aforementioned social networks has a greater tendency of spending up to twenty hours on such a social site per day, and judging by that, we know what such a habit does to the other activities to be executed by same person for that day and other days to come.

Now lets draw our camera closer, talking about the youth and the social network. Most of our youths have become madly addicted to social networks that it does not permit them to do any other thing other than tweeting, face booking, face partying, 2going, etc, both in the classroom, workplace, church, mosque, on the road and even at occasion of important discussion they seen face glued to their phones social networking.

In the classroom, students are often seen busy with their phones while their teacher /lecturer are delivering an important lesson, their faces are glued to their phones, their eyes and mind focused on what they are indulged into. And at the end they are able to learn nothing for that day and other days to come, without sentiment we all know the terrible impact it will have on such a student or students; absolute stagnated knowledge and lost on academic direction. From class to home, same student has not allowed his/her phone to have just a minute rest, still face glued to the phone screen, busying with chatting, uploading of photos and videos, etc. and to be honest, such activities on social networks are too fascinating for an addicted mind to resist the temptation and quit. And at the end, the academic development and performance of that student begins to decline drastically.

Same trend follows even the working class often referred to as the mature minds, yet they are deeply drowned in the same act. The speed of their work rate has been badly altered by their addiction for the social site, and equally, their work output has suffered a lot all because of same issue of social network addiction, browsing without a recess. And even most people have made mistakes of great grave implications during the execution of both their own and delegated duties all because of their lack of concentration as a result of their mad lust after the phone on their hands; social networking. And some of these people have lost their work or position because they could not deliver well and excellently equally as expected or stipulated, then ask me why, why? Simply because of their deep involvement and addiction on the social networks which has stolen the better part of their mind, brain and attention, then every other thing, no matter how imperative that maybe then it must suffer helplessly and even sometimes, must collapse as a whole.

And even while driving or walking on the motor roads, people are still seen pressing on the buttons of their phones, busily browsing through the social sites on the internet. Parents return home, and instead of sharing their lovely time with their family, they are rather over occupied with the issue of social network. In the church, people are still seen busy with their phones, face and mind glued to their phones, totally cut off from the purpose of their coming to the church. Too bad of a habit or trend or even a menace.

So, I ask, is this issue of social networking a kind of new madness or a lifestyle? I am equally a user some of these social sites, but I have a regulation to the usage of them. Nevertheless, expect the concluding part of this article soon.

  1. For me, this is a cliched article. You only wasted time mentioning things already known. And why would you go to having this writeup in parts when you could still write the same thing within an article? Get a hold on your article skill and do good writing with brevity.

  2. Maxwell, it is a good thing you attempted writing on the ills of social networking or the menace of cyberspace. I am not impressed with your use of certain prepositions in your article. I feel there were unnecessary repetitions which made it a very tasking read. Now, you may want to check your usage of ‘but a few’ when ‘a few’ would suffice. Quite a number of spelling errors too. I would have mentioned them now but I got to move on quickly.
