It’s Only In Africa: Part 1

It’s only in Africa, where black is beauty

Yet many want to be white

Men are the movers and shakers

Mannacled by traditions;

And women are sweet n’ subservient

Dance to the tunes of fife

For the glory of their black beasts.

It’s only in Africa

Kola nuts and shinups are bread and wine

And libations are poured for ancestors

Spirits prowl homes in the night

And sacrifices appease them;

Peace prevails when they dine and wine

On flesh and blood of humans

Practices condemned by the white man.

It’s only in Africa

People are rich in primitive energy

And tourist attractions to the whites;

Ways of her people are best

Yet barbaric to those whom West is home

Wear bikinis in the streets

Private rooms are Muliru Gardens

And swap their wives and husbands

To live the Western lifestyles.

It’s only in Africa,

Religion is uncouth, civilization a million miles away

Europeans promise a white heaven in black home

And folk songs are blues and R&Bs;

Our dances and nyatiti are salsa, ballet and piano

Story times are movies and discos

And God of our fathers has a son we must worship!

It’s only in Africa

Freedom fighters are terrorists

Warriors are rebels

Bows, arrows and spears are AK47s

And wars are fought from America;

With drones and intercontinental missiles

Shaka Zulu and Oloibon are war criminals

Taken to the ICC for crimes against their people.

It’s only in Africa

Al Qaeda is Boko Haram

And Al Shabaab want to go to Alaska;

Forests of Congo are Vietnam

And Lord’s Resistance Army is Taliban

Nelson Mandela is now a saint

Jomo Kenyatta the founding father of the nation

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is Martin Luther King, Jr.

The visionary eye of the United States of Africa.

It’s only in Africa

Coup de’ tats seize power

The warlords become presidents

Who become terrorists with time

And are hunted down by the international community

Killed by intensive NATO air strikes

Die in culverts, or caged like animals

And burried under the ruins of the cities they once built.

  2. It is only in Africa that our young men and women want to bear stone and cold….It is only in Africa.
    Again the identity issue is brought to fore in this poem.Beautiful craft I must say.Thank you for sharing.

    • @sambright…. you are a great reader, keep it up… u have seen through the lines that our moral, cultural and spiritual fabric has disintegrated in to an amorphous shape… we need to get back to the ways of our people and get our identity back

  3. @elovepoetry … true to the reality…
