If Tomorrow Never Comes

If I knew it would be the last time that I’d see you fall asleep

I would tuck you in more tightly, and pray the Lord your soul to keep

If I knew it would be the last time I’d hear your tinkling laugh

I would whip out all of my wit so I can bask in your dazzling smile

If I knew it would be the last time I’d see you walk out of the door

I would give you a hug and a kiss and call you back for one more

If I knew it would be the last time I’d apologize for that fight we had

I would chase you down just so I could say ‘I’m sorry’

If I knew it would be the last time I’d hear your voice lifted in praise

I would videotape all your actions and words so I could play them back day after day

If I knew it would be the last time I’d drink from the nectar of the fountain of your kisses

I would kiss you before every dawn, every stir and every meal

If I knew it would be the last time I’d have the chance to say ‘I love you’

I would stop assuming you’d know I do, and spare an extra minute or two to say those words to you

I believe we’ll have many more days, that I can let just this one slip away

For surely there’s always tomorrow to make up for an oversight

There will always be a second chance to make everything right

Another day to hug, to kiss, to hold you close to me

But just in case I might be wrong and today is all I get

If tomorrow never comes and regret lurks in the corner for me

I’d like to take that extra time to witness your brilliance

To hold you close today, to live in the moment with you

I’d like to take this chance to say how much you mean to me

For tomorrow is promised to no one, young or old alike

So if tomorrow never comes, then today shall be our best there is.
