Strange Love

“In case chief calls, tell him I’m in the bathroom,” Mary instructed her roommate who was lying on the bed.

Juliet gazed up at her, curiosity reflecting in her eyes. “Which chief are you talking about?” She asked.

“The one I told you I met yesterday at the party. I’ m supposed to meet him tonight.”

“Oh!”

“Just tell him, I said he should send me the address.”

“Ok.”

Mary left for the bathroom which was built separately from the main house, leaving Juliet to continue wallowing in her misery. For close to an hour now Juliet had been lying on that bed thinking of what to do about her financial problem: her mother had suddenly fallen ill and she couldn’t foot the medical bills. The little she saved from the salon where she worked as a hairdresser wouldn’t be enough, and she was bereft of ideas on what to do. Mary had told her she could make the money in just three nights. But Juliet detested anything that involved promiscuity. It was against her moral standards. What was she to do then? She thought. She didn’t want to lose her mother.

The shrill sound of Mary’s phone cut across to her. She grabbed it, it was chief. She made to pick the call but then hesitated- a very risky idea had just occurred to her. I’m sorry Mary but I have to do this!

She cleared her voice and then picked the call.

“Hello!” She sang in a singsong voice.

“Is that Mary?” Chief asked, obviously noting the difference.

“No. I’m her roommate.”

“Can you get Mary on the line please?”

“I’m sorry she’s not around right now. But she told me you would call.”

“She did?”

“Yes. She said she couldn’t make it tonight. So she left me the phone in order to entertain you in place of her, if you want,” Juliet lied.

There was a pause at the other end. Juliet peeped through the window, no sign of Mary yet. She squeezed her face and waited apprehensively for his reply.

“Ok.” Chief finally said and Juliet relaxed. “I hope you look as good as you sound?”

“Wait until you see the full package,” she teased and asked for the address which chief gladly gave her before hanging up the phone.

Juliet immediately sprung into action. Thankfully she had taken her bath already, she only needed to put on her cloth and zoom off. What if Mary called him? She thought for a moment and then turned suddenly, picked up Mary’s phone and deleted chief’s number from it. Let her worry about how she lost chief’s number!

By the time Mary got in Juliet was already leaving.

“I’ m coming,” Juliet told her and went off.

The yellow taxi stopped in front of Bellview hotel situated at the financial hub of Enugu. Juliet stepped down from the car and glanced at the hotel. It was an imposing structure, its beauty magnified by the numerous light bulbs wrestling the dark atmosphere. She began having cold feet at that instant. What if someone she knew saw her? She felt she couldn’t carry on with the plan, but the image of her sick mother kept tugging her to continue.

She adjusted her red short gown that clung tightly to her skin and decided to stick to the plan. She traced her way gracefully to the lobby and up to room 324, but not without the guidance of the concierge who kept drooling over her.

She knocked on the door. “Come in,” answered a sonorous voice from inside. Juliet paused as if trying to make up her mind and then entered.

Inside was a man in his late thirties, sitting on the bed, with only his boxer short on. Juliet stopped abruptly in her tracks. Maybe she was in the wrong room? She thought.

“Is this chief’s room,” she asked.

“Yes,” the man answered. “And you’re Mary’s roommate?”

Juliet nodded.

“Come on in,” he beckoned at her and Juliet reluctantly went forward.

What had confused her earlier was that he defied every image she had in her head of him. She had pictured him to be one of those ugly potbellied, old men that were lucky to have a beautiful wife and yet wouldn’t be satisfied. But the man sitting there was entirely the opposite of that. He was young and handsome. Why was Mary calling him chief?

She felt his eyes rove over her and she became flustered. Chief then stood up, towering over her, his nigh perfectly carved physique standing out, and quite had an aura of a very rich and powerful man. He advanced towards her and Juliet noticed he had the same brown eyes as hers. As she felt the closeness of his skin to hers an overpowering sensation trickled over her, and she became aware she was attracted to this man. When he smiled at her, Juliet’s heart leapt. That she came here for business no longer mattered, her sick mother momentarily forgotten, all she could think of right now was a way to get this man to see her past what she’d come to offer him.

What she didn’t know was that she didn’t have to work that hard, for something not so different was going on in chief’s mind. He was attracted to her the instant he heard her voice on the phone. Her presence only intensified it. She was just as he imagined she would be; young, probably 25, charming and angelic. A look at her had told him she was a novice. And he would do anything to have her.

“Have a seat,” he motioned her to the bed. He picked up a bottle of wine from the table and asked Juliet if she cared for a drink, to which Juliet declined. He went ahead to pour himself one.

“So tell me which state you from?” chief asked.

“Imo state.”

“Have you done this before?” he asked slyly and waited for her reply.

The question unsettled her. She contemplated on what answer to give to him; whether to tell him the truth or not. She considered that if she told him the truth, he might be put off, and if she lied he would still find out. “No,” Juliet admitted. “But I’m assuring you that you won’t regret it,” she added quickly in a hope not to discourage him.

“I don’t think I will.” He smiled at her and Juliet’s heart leapt again.

As she watched chief gulp down his drink, Juliet noticed there was no ring on his finger, not even an impression to show he had ever worn one, which could only mean one thing to her; he wasn’t married, and in a strange way it elevated her to know that. For a moment silence prevailed. None of them knew what to do, each waiting for the other to make a move.

“I’m Jude by the way, but I’m mostly known as chief,” he attempted to break the ice.

Juliet just nodded and twirled her hair in discomfort.

Prompted by her reason for being here, Juliet suddenly stood up, instincts taking over her, filling her with boldness she didn’t know she had.

“No more talking,” Juliet said and walked up to where he stood. She took the half empty glass from him, placed it on the table and pushed him gently onto the bed. She made him sit and watch while she slowly and playfully removed her cloth. How she was able to do what she was doing right now only God knows?

Standing closer to the bed now with nothing but her bra and pant on, she smiled seductively at Jude who was totally overwhelmed by the alluring power of the damsel in front of him. As she undid her bra to reveal a well rounded breast she heard Jude’s sharp intake of breathe and it spurred her on. All the while chief was speechless, his whole body submitting to sensuality. The part of him he thought was long dead was now being revived.

She advanced towards Jude and removed his boxer short at the resistance of his awoken member. To her surprise Jude suddenly grabbed her and pinned her back, to the bed. He thrust his mouth into hers and began kissing her passionately. At first Juliet was confused, even more confused at the yearning for response building inside her. No man had evoked such kind of feeling from her before. Not even Gideon, her onetime boyfriend. Juliet managed to push Gideon out of her thoughts and decided to allow the tide of the moment drown her. And when she did, a strong feeling of adventure enveloped her, and she responded hungrily.

Egged on by her response, Jude’s hands began to explore her body, caressing her taut skin, each touch sending sparks of excitement through her and unloosening her skin. His hands then found her now hardened breast and began stroking them. Then his mouth disentangled from hers and traced its way from her neck to her erected nipple and started making love to it. Warmth shot from her navel up to her body and she let out a soft moan of immense pleasure.

Her own hands ran over the thickness of Jude’s body, in and out of the contours of his back and felt him tremble with each touch. Knowing her touch had the same effect on him as his on her added to the thrill and her confidence rose. She drew chief’s mouth to hers in a ferocious kiss, tongue probing and colliding with each other. Then Jude’s mouth again began to trace its way down her body, each touch reveling with experience, and sending shudders over her.

Then he removed her pant, feeling her wetness and decided it was time to become one. He slid his penis into her, pounding gently and unceasingly until they both saw God.

It was now 8 months since after that escapade at the hotel. What had started as a mere business opportunity had now blown into an intimate relationship. Scene after scene the events of that night played in Juliet’s mind as she lay on her bed. Who would have thought she was capable of doing those things she did? She giggled at the absurdity of their behavior that night and hugged the pillow tightly. She was in love for the first time in her life, a wonderful feeling she couldn’t part with. And the best part of it was that it was reciprocated. Jude showered her with lots of it. Jude stayed in Lagos where he managed his father’s company. He occasionally came to Enugu for business. And whenever they met, nothing else existed in her eyes.

She had her own apartment now courtesy of Jude. Mary had called her all sorts of names the day she found out about her and Jude. She even went as far as telling Jude what had happened when he came to visit her. Juliet would never forget that day. Jude had looked into her eyes and said it doesn’t matter. That he’s actually happy that it happened and that she is his life now. She remembered tears had streamed down her eyes at those words and how they were cemented with a loving kiss.

Now she was no longer in speaking terms with Mary. She knew what she did was bad. But she justified her actions by claiming Mary was never in love with chief. And the outcome of her deed even lessened her guilt the more. What was meant to be will be! She guessed.

Her phone rang jerking her out of her thoughts. She made hastily for it, thinking it was Jude. He hadn’t called her today and she longed desperately for his voice. She picked up the phone, it was her mother. She sighed in disappointment. Why was her mother calling her? She just spoke to her yesterday?

“Hello mum,” she greeted.

“Juliet your father is in town and he is asking to see you,” her mother blurted out.

“Not again mum. I thought I told you I want nothing to do with that man.”

“I know but he’s still your father.”

“He’s not my father for all I care. How can I call someone that abandoned me as a child, someone I’ve never set my eyes on, my father, eh mum! Tell me how can I!”

“It was not entirely his fault. Please for my sake,” her mother pleaded.

“I can do anything for you mum but not this one. Tell him I don’t want to see him.”

“Juliet I think he at least have the right to-”

“I don’t want to see him period,” she shouted and hung up the phone.

She was infuriated. How could he have the effrontery to say he wanted to see her after abandoning her? She thought angrily. Let him continue coming for all he like, I’ll never see him! She voiced adamantly in her head and began to sob, the pillow taking the brunt of it, until she fell asleep.

Two days later Juliet was on the streets of Douglas in Owerri. She had agreed to see her supposed father after her mother’s continued persistence. Jude had also called her the day before and she told him about it. As usual He had listened and understood her position, but had advised her to go see him. He told her that if not for one thing she should at least hear him out. He also told her that he knows that deep within her she wants to see him but her headstrongness won’t let her. Jude was right. She was headstrong, but that was the reason she survived this long without him. Her anchor had been that since she and her mother had been surviving without him they would continue to do so without him. Nevertheless she had agreed to hear him out and also to take a look at the man that ruined her mother’s life and almost ruined hers.

But that was not the major reason she was coming home; Jude had proposed last night on the phone.

She could see their home now. A land cruiser jeep stood in front of it and Juliet knew it belonged to him. She sighed.

“Mum! I’m home,” she called and knocked on the door.

“Come in dear,” her mother shouted back from the sitting room.

She opened the door and walked into the sitting room to the smiling face of her mother. Two men sat with her; one young, the other old. The young one had his back to her. When he turned to face her, Juliet transfixed in her position.

“Jude! What are you doing here?” She asked the young man whose face had contorted into horror.

Her parents kept glancing from one face to the other bemused.

“Do you know him Juliet? He’s my son,” her father said and Juliet’s hand flew to her mouth in stark horror.

  1. “…until they both saw God.”? Jesus Christ!

A story of incest. Well-written. Good one bro.

  2. Strange indeed…Sometimes I think The Fates lay traps for us and then watch us fall or jump over it. All the time, laughing at our antics..
    Well done..

  3. I liked the ending, nice twist, although I expected it. sad tho

  4. @gretel, we think alike then…
    Thank you, I appreciate.

  5. @francis no freewill eh? Remember having this discussion with someone or a group long time ago.
    Fate…choices…consequences.
    Okay now.
I like d story sha…incest. Na wa sha…how do they resolve this now?

    • @Shai, of course, ain’t free will. When viewed from our perspective you’ll be tricked into thinking we have. But from the Creator’s perspective we didn’t. We’re here for a purpose of his, not of ours… I just do my thing hoping I made the right decision…

Thank you for liking the story bro. I wonder how too…

  6. I like this one. Its good. Best wishes.

  7. I liked the story, turned sour @ the end….

  8. Me likey. Nice story

  9. Nicely written, just one question, why Jude and Juliet? I think African names would have given your story some more oomph. Good work.

  10. Good story but the typos almost killed. Also your use of multiple locations was almost clumsy. Very good read all the same.

  11. Good story, but it sorta fell flat in the end. The twist was expected, so I would’ve expected U to have milked the expressions or reactions of the characters more.
    Well, good luck.

  12. Oh…wonderful. In many ways, this is how to write a story. And the sex scene? You sure elevated coitus to fine art there! Well done.

  13. @Chemo, you humble me with your comment. I’m very grateful. Thank you Chemo.

  14. Francis, the typos and a few errors killed what would have been extraordinary! Somehow the end was somewhat expected. No surprises.
Still, you did your job. Perhaps this could have been better (looking at the end mainly) but well, even like this, I salute your pen. Cheers.

  15. “Until they saw God…”
    was it blasphemous?
I think it made Western romance akinda famous.
Suspenseful in between with an abrupt ending.

    Interesting.

  16. @Ostar, it ain’t blasphemy oh, it’s a figurative term, I know you know. I wanted to use ‘heaven’ but since God resides in heaven, I decided to use this one instead…

It depicts the Nigerian modern romance which of course was borrowed from the west nah

Thanks bro for reading, may your muse never cease.
