4 men in black suits attending to Vanessa
ACT I
(In an office. A man dressed in a grey suit, brown tie and a polished pair of brown leather shoes is seen behind his desk, looking through some paper documents. He is in his late twenties. A lady is seen standing beside him, dressed in a pink skirt suit. The expression on the man’s face is that of extreme disillusionment, disbelief and shock all put together as he reads the documents in a frantic state. The lady is somewhat cool and collected.)
MARCUS: My goodness! I cannot believe this!! I cannot believe what is put on these papers, Judith. Vanessa, a drug baroness? That is impossible!! (pause. Reads) ‘For forty months, Vanessa has indulged herself in the production and sale of unknown but destructive drugs gotten on import and converted to her taste.’ (pause) God, Judith! This news is atrocious! (stands up and bangs the documents on the desk) I can’t believe this! I just cannot believe this!! Vanessa is the woman I poured my everything on: my love, my trust, my happiness … my life. Oh Judith! (paces) So, she is the one who is adulterating Kerang water. Why? I don’t understand it. She assigned me to maintain the purity of Kerang water. Why is she now adulterating it? Why? Why, Judith? (The lady sadly shakes her head) I’m ruined! This knowledge has killed me!! I love Vanessa. (The lady reacts to this statement but still keeps her cool. MARCUS looks heavenwards hopelessly.) O Kerang, I am your son. I am here to keep your water pure and safe for your people. (pause) O Kerang, let me love you. I am here for you, for your water nourishes me. Me and my mother. (pause) I’m finished, Judith. Vanessa … she gave me this office, gave me this dress I am wearing, gave me you as my assistant. Oh!
JUDITH: (plaintively) Please, sir! Let us continue with our work.
MARCUS: (fiercely) No! Work ends here. Work ends forever!! Judith, be with my mother and wait for me, for I must do something of great importance to my manhood. (sadly) I have lost everything to Vanessa. (pause) But not my manhood. Go quickly and wait for me. I am going to meet that Helen. I was born bad, but she … she loves badness. I’m gone. (exits)
JUDITH: My God! What is he going to do now? I pray he shouldn’t come to any harm. (pause) For how long will I hide this love I have for him? For how long? Oh God! Help me! Help me, please!! (walks towards a crucifix hung beside the wall clock and kneels) Jesus … protect him for me. Keep him safe. He needs that right now. He needs you. Please, keep him safe for me. But most importantly, help me to make the right decision. (stands up) I have to go now. Thank you, Jesus. (exits)
