Val’s Day

Val’s Day

INT. ADANNA/JENNY’S ROOM – MORNING

ADANNA and JENNY are putting final make-up touches on their faces. Both girls are in their early twenties. Both are dressed-to-kill and pretty too. They both chat happily as they make up. Adanna finishes her making up first. She gets up and goes inside. After a while, she comes out ready to go.

ADANNA

I guess I’ll see you …

JENNY

Tomorrow.

ADANNA

(smiling)

Tomorrow then. Have a wonderful val’s day.

Jenny turns and looks at Adanna admirably.

JENNY

(smiling)

Have a wonderful val’s day too.

Adanna goes out as Jenny keeps looking at her.

CUT TO:

INT. EMEKA’S ROOM – MORNING

EMEKA, just past mid twenties and good looking, is fully dresses. He is impatiently waiting for someone. He paces around for a while. After a while, a knock is heard at the door. Emeka listens to make sure there’s a really a knock at the door. The knock comes again. Emeka tip-toes to the window and looks out. He sees who is knocking and opens the door. PETER, in his mid twenties, enters. He is carrying a big box.

EMEKA

I have been waiting for you since.

PETER

Sorry.

Peter has this look on his face that shows he isn’t too happy.

EMEKA

Thank you stars you didn’t make this girl meet me in this house. You’d have paid for our outing today. Let’s not waste so much time. Just tell her I got an urgent call from home. From my mum.

Peter nods. Emeka looks at Peter closely.

EMEKA (CONT’D)

You don’t seem alright.

PETER

I’m okay.

EMEKA

(still looking at him suspiciously)

If you say so.

(Pause)

Go check if she’s coming.

Peter goes to the window and looks out.

PETER

(expressionlessly)

She’s coming.

EMEKA

(casually)

Don’t joke with me.

PETER

Go upstairs. I’ll bring her in and you’ll leave through the balcony.

Emeka goes and peeps through the window. He hurriedly turns to Peter.

EMEKA

Good plan. See you later.

Emeka leaves through the back door. Peter puts his box in a corner and sits down. After a while, a knock is heard. Peter closes his eyes, counts to five and then goes to open the door. He opens the door. Adanna enters the room. She exchanges pleasantries with Emeka

CUT TO:

I/E. BALCONY/PREMISES – MORNING

Peter goes to where Emeka is supposed to leave from. He looks up at the balcony.

PETER

(in a low voice)

Emeka…

Emeka slowly looks out.

EMEKA

Has she gone?

PETER

She’s inside. I think she’ll stay for a while. You can leave now.

Emeka begins to climb down from the balcony. He is still hanging about to release his hands when an old woman sees him.

OLD WOMAN

(shouting)

What are you doing? Do you want to wound yourself?

Emeka stays still. Peter turns to the old woman and smiles.

PETER

(to Old Woman)

Mama, he is… preparing for a… climbing competition. He is a professional climber.

Old woman nods but isn’t convinced. Peter eyes Emeka. Emeka begins to pull himself up and down. His first three pull-ups are fast. The next two slower. The next two very slow before he climbs down. He lies on the ground panting. The Old woman comes to where he is.

OLD WOMAN

Hope climbing is not the only thing you do?

Old woman walks away slowly. Emeka waits for her to go far before getting up hurriedly.

EMEKA

I am out of here.

PETER

You better be. And better work hard on your push-ups or whatever you call it.

Emeka hurries off through the back. Peter watches for a while then turns to see… Jenny is standing at a distance watching him. Peter doesn’t understand why Jenny is staring at him. He stands where he is for a while as he and Jenny stare at each other for a while. Peter looks at himself all over but still can’t understand why this lovely girl is staring at him. Finally, Emeka begins to walk back to the room. Jenny keeps staring at him till he enters the house.

CUT TO:

I/E. EMEKA’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Peter enters and sees Adanna lying on the bed. Peter goes and lies beside her.

ADANNA

So, he doesn’t know when he is likely going to return?

PETER

No.

A knock is heard at the door. Peter rushes to open the door. Peter is surprised to see Jenny standing right before him. Peter quickly goes outside and closes the door behind him.

PETER (CONT’D)

(in a low tone)

I don’t know what you think you saw but it is none of your business.

JENNY

I want to see Adanna.

PETER

(in a low tone)

Why?

ADANNA (O.S.)

Peter, who is it?

PETER

It’s not Emeka.

JENNY

Adanna, it is Jenny.

ADANNA (O.S.)

(Surprised)

Jenny?

Adanna opens the door and sees Jenny.

ADANNA (CONT’D)

What’s up?

JENNY

You forgot the present.

ADANNA

(confused)

The present?

JENNY

The one I gave to you.

ADANNA

(remembers)

Okay.

Jenny hands over a pack to Adanna. The exchange glances that leave Peter confused.

JENNY

I’ll be on my way now.

PETER

I’ll see you off.

JENNY

(smiling)

You don’t need to. I am a regular visitor here.

PETER

(forcing a smile)

Well… I’m not a frequent host here.

(To Adanna)

I’ll be back in a minute.

ADANNA

(smiling, to Jenny)

Have a wonderful val’s day.

Jenny and Peter quickly exchange a glance.

JENNY

(smiling)

I’ll see you when I get back. Peter and Jenny walk outside.

CUT TO:

EXT. EMEKA’S HOUSE – CONTINUOUS

Peter and Jenny are walking to the road. Both say nothing to each other. Jenny is facing straight but Peter turns to look at her from time to time.

PETER

I want to show you something. Can we go back?

Jenny keeps going forward.

PETER (CONT’D)

Please?

Jenny doesn’t stop.

PETER (CONT’D)

Jenny, please. Jenny stops.

JENNY

Better  be snappy about it.

CUT TO:

INT. EMEKA’S ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Adanna is lying on the bed. She is lost in deep thought. A knock is heard and Jenny enters followed by Peter. Adanna is surprised to see Jenny.

ADANNA

(smiling)

Did I forget another present?

JENNY

(smiling)

No. Peter wants to show me something.

Peter, meanwhile, is bringing the box.

JENNY (CONT’D)

(casually)

I haven’t seen Emeka today?

ADANNA

He went out… to get some… goodies…

Adanna looks at Peter who is still bringing the box.

ADANNA (CONT’D)

(to Jenny smiling)

You know how it is. Jenny and Peter exchange glances.

JENNY

Of course. I really know how it is.

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD – MOMENTS LATER

Jenny is waiting for a bike. Peter is standing beside her. Both are silent. Peter looks at Jenny. Jenny notices but doesn’t look at Peter.

JENNY

So what’s up with the box you showed me?

PETER

Long story. Showed you so that… say he leaves through the balcony, maybe you’d spend some time with me.

(Pause)

Then I’ll tell you the long story.

Jenny thinks for a while. She then smiles and brings out her phone from her handbag. She dials a number and puts the call on loud speaker.

JENNY

Hello darling…

BENNY (O.P.)

Hi baby.

JENNY

Wanted to hear your voice. I’m missing you so much.

BENNY (O.P.)

Same here. Wish I could talk to you the whole since I can’t be with you.

JENNY

(smiling)

I love you so much.

BENNY (O.P.)

I love you so much more.

JENNY

Talk to you later.

BENNY (O.P.)

Later boo.

Jenny ends the call smiling.

JENNY

I got something very serious going on for me. I know you don’t have any girl right now.

PETER

How do you know?

JENNY

It’s written all over your face.

PETER

That’s true. But somehow, I see something like that on your face.

(Pause)

Seriously.

(Pause)

Where is he?

JENNY

We are not discussing that.

PETER

Thought since you love him so much, you wouldn’t have any qualms talking about him. Maybe he travelled through the balcony too.

JENNY

He travelled to Lagos.

PETER

On val’s day. Maybe he’s just not as gutless as Emeka.

(Pause)

Telling you before leaving.

JENNY

For true lovers, every day should be val’s day. February 14th should just be a special val’s day. There’s this merger the company he works for is trying to tie up while other are…

(sarcastically)

…valentining.

PETER

Do you… have something against today?

JENNY

(pause; thinks)

Maybe. I have spoken to only four people today who all lied. The first person leaves his girlfriend. The girlfriend lies to her friend. The third person lies to his friend’s girlfriend. How can I not have anything against today?

  9. @Jay-For me,good xterization, coherent dialogue and psychological penetration of xters not 4geting a riveting diction are the selling points of dis opus. The wiles of treachery and incontinence we see in our streets are gleaned in di pale portraits of Peter and Emeka and even Jenny.Again there’s no denying dat we like Emeka…leave through di back door or like Peter tell on our friends,if anything 2 save our neck.Thats not to say its good but the playwright has painted a true 2 life picture with human image in it.Who’s image,I think aloud?Kai,I was thoroughly regaled by di Oldwoman’s satirical question.Lol! Dat left me reeling with laughter.Jay,u dunnit again!
