The Novel 3

The Novel 3

INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE – DAY

Ada and MRS. DUKE are discussing.

EXT. UCHE’S PREMISES – DAY

Gate man opens the gate and Stella drives in. Stella comes out of the car and hurries into the house. Moments later she comes out of the house carrying a bag. She tells the gate man to open the gate. As she is about to enter the car, she hears someone giggle. She follows the sound to find Tony and Helen reading. Stella is very surprised to see this. Neither Tony and Helen sees her though. Stella goes back to her car and drives out.

INT. UCHE’S SITTING ROOM – NIGHT

Uche is watching tv as he drinks a bottle of beer. Stella enters and seats beside him. She takes the remote control and changes the channel.

UCHE

(expressionlessly)

I know you don’t know what news is.

STELLA

And someone doesn’t know what Nollywood movie is.

UCHE

News is for the matured. Nollywood is for women.

STELLA

That is what some people think.

UCHE

Okay, you win. Tell me what it is you wanted to tell me so I can continue with my news.

Stella turns off the tv.

STELLA

(smiles)

Well… it is about Tony.

UCHE

Has he repented again or has he now become a pastor?

STELLA

(seriously)

I think he has really changed.

UCHE

Do you really believe that Tony Montana would just change like that? When the pope hasn’t come? The archbishop hasn’t prayed for him? You think he can just change like that?

STELLA

(pause)

I have not told you this before but I think that girl, the Akah’s daughter is responsible.

UCHE

She was expelled from her school as well. They are the same so why won’t she be responsible? Tell me why…

STELLA

(cuts in)

The girl is having a positive effect on our boy. Don’t people make mistakes. They are children… things like these are bound to happen.

UCHE

Don’t use they. I can accept the girl’s case was a mistake. But that your son’s case… your angel, your saint… his is more of a habit.

STELLA

Are you making fun of me and Tony?

UCHE

(smiles)

Tony Montana, not just Tony.

Uche gets up and smiles as he bounces around.

UCHE (CONT’D)

This is how he was bouncing. The whole school was chanting “Tony Montana”.

(pause)

Your boy is a very popular student.

Stella watches as Uche bounces back to his seat.

STELLA

(apologetically)

I know our son has done a lot of bad things.

UCHE

I am very happy you know that.

STELLA

But we can’t stop treating him the way parents should treat a child.

(long pause)

I still believe this has affected him positively.

UCHE

That might be why he greets us every morning and after meals.

STELLA

(happily)

I’m glad you noticed.

UCHE

I noticed. I thought about it too. He wants us to calm down so he’ll strike again. Tony Montana is a very smart boy.

Uche bursts into laughter.

UCHE (CONT’D)

(still laughing)

Tony Montana can never deceive me again.

Uche gets up and goes inside. Stella watches him with disappointment written all over her face.

EXT. STADIUM PREMISES – DAY

Helen is walking into the lawn tennis court.

EXT. LAWN TENNIS COURT – DAY

Helen enters the lawn tennis court. She spots Tony sitting in a court. Some people are trying to get Tony to leave the court. Helen rushes to Tony and whispers something to him.  After a while, Tony reluctantly gets up and follows Helen outside. At the entrance, Tony gives a “fuck you” with his middle finger without turning. Helen turns and Tony quickly brings down his hand.

EXT. STREET – DAY

Helen and Tony are walking back silently. Tony turns to look at Helen from time to time. After a while, Helen looks at him.

HELEN

Do you know why we play tennis?

TONY

Have fun, exercise the body.

HELEN

Discipline.

(pause)

Every sports has a way of disciplining you.

(laughing)

I don’t believe I can’t keep my eyes off you for a moment.

TONY

I don’t like people cheating me.

HELEN

(smiling)

I must commend your style of protest though. Very good. You don’t have to protest always though.

(pause)

Kenny Rogers said in one of his songs that you don’t have to fight to be a man.

TONY

Kelly Rowlands?

HELEN

Kenny Rogers.

TONY

Don’t know her.

HELEN

Him.

TONY

What kind of songs does he sing?

HELEN

Country.

TONY

Type of songs, not country. Rap or R and B or rock…

HELEN

(cuts in)

He sings country music.

(pause; smiles)

You only Tupac and Snoop.

TONY

Boy 2 men, K. C and Jojo, R. Kelly…

HELEN

Before these guys, there was Kenny Rogers. Okay?

TONY

Okay.

(pause)

He said what again?

HELEN

You don’t have to fight to be a man.

TONY

Okay. How about some ice cream?

INT. STELLA’S OFFICE – DAY

Stella and Ada are seating down as they discuss.

ADA

That’s how far I have gone to make sure she gets back to school very soon. She has made the mistake already. We can’t crucify her for that.

STELLA

My husband doesn’t see it that way. He want Tony to stay at home for a year. For him, that is an appropriate punishment.

ADA

Well… I don’t feel that’s the best. They soon they get back into school, the better. Helen has made a mistake, she has been corrected and the sooner she makes amends, the better. And how can she make amends if she doesn’t go back to school.

(pause)

I think that is also what your son needs.

STELLA

I think you are very right. All the good schools are willing to accept him in SS2. I am very sure Tony would want that.

ADA

Well… I have a friend who is the principal of a very good school. He has promised to help me out.

(thinks)

Maybe I should take you there. They night work something out and have Tony take his SSCE there.

INT. PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE – DAY

Stella , Ada and Mrs. Duke are discussing.

EXT. UCHE’S PORCH – DAY

Stella and Ada are drinking some wine as they discuss.

STELLA

Honestly, when I was afraid when Tony and Helen became. I thought Tony was going to be a bad influence on your son. But right now, I feel the reverse is the case.

ADA

That’s how things turn out sometimes.

STELLA

It’s just hard to believe. Tony Montana.

(smiles)

It’s hard to believe.

EXT. BEN’S PREMISES – DAY

Someone knocks at the gate a couple of times. Helen comes out of the house as the gate man opens the gate. Tony enters. He is wearing a basketball gear and sweating. Helen is surprised to see him.

HELEN

I thought you were going to a cousin’s wedding with your parents.

TONY

I changed my mind. Heard some of my friends came into town. They called this morning and a fixed a game.

HELEN

That was why you didn’t go for your cousin’s wedding?

TONY

I knew the wedding would be boring… very boring. The couple believe earrings are bad… alcohol too… trousers for females… rap music… almost everything. And something would surely make my dad remember I was expelled from school. And he will shout at me all through the trip.

HELEN

Please come and sit down. You have a thousand good reasons for not going.

They sit under a tree and begin talking.

HELEN (CONT’D)

Do you need anything to drink?

TONY

Just drank some water now. Thanks.

MOMENTS LATER:

Helen and Tony are still talking. Someone knocks at the gate. The gate man opens the gate. Nonye enters. Helen is very surprised to see her. Nonye walks to Helen and they both hug each other very tightly. After the hug, Helen takes Nonye to Tony and makes the necessary introductions.

HELEN

(to Nonye)

So how is school?

NONYE

School is…

(begins to cry)

Fine.

Tony is very surprised. Helen stares at Nonye.

HELEN

What’s the problem? Nonye.

Nonye continues crying. Helen goes close to her and tries to console her. Tony gets very uncomfortable and clearly doesn’t know what to do.

HELEN (CONT’D)

Nonye, are we no longer my friend?

NONYE

(still crying)

We are.

HELEN

Then tell me what he problem.

NONYE

(long pause; still crying)

They keep saying I am the devil who should have been expelled not you.

Tony is shocked.

HELEN

Who is saying?

NONYE

(still crying)

Students and some teachers… they treat me very badly now that sometimes I wish I could just run away… and never go back to that school.

HELEN

You should be stronger than this.

NONYE

(crying louder)

You can’t be strong when everybody hates you.

HELEN

Nobody hates you.

NONYE

(still crying)

They do. I can’t go back to that school… unless you come with me… let’s tell them the truth… I will be expelled and you can stay back.

(pause)

Maybe then, I will be left alone.

HELEN

I will go with you. But we make them love you. Remember, you won’t be expelled alone if we tell them the truth.

(looks at Tony; then at Nonye)

Tony will go with us too.

(pause, then smiles)

And we are going as soon as Tony goes home and dresses up.

TONY

(looks at Helen)

Are you… serious?

HELEN

We are waiting for you.

Tony begins to go.

HELEN (CONT’D)

Now you have to smile.

Nonye tries a smile amidst tears.

Female students are listening to Helen as she addresses the students standing on top of the car. Other students keep coming. Tony is at a corner staring at Helen. There is a look of total admiration on his face. He is smiling as he looks at her.

MALE VOICE (V.O.)

For the first time, she truly realized she did a good thing for Nonye. She liked the way she spoke confidently.

(pause)

For the first time, he respected a girl. He respected a lot of women but never a girl. For the first time, he sure a girl he genuinely respected. He knew this girl was bigger than Tony Montana. Tony Montana was respected. Helen was loved and respected.

Helen tells Nonye to climb on top of the car with her. Nonye joins Helen on top of the car.

HELEN

I hope you keep to this promise you made today. To love and respect her the way you loved and respected me.

They students clap and cheer. Helen casually looks at the students. Her gaze meets Tony’s. They both smile at each other. They look at each other for a while.

MALE VOICE (V.O.)

Helen believes that was the moment she fell in love with Tony.

(pause)

Tony believes that was the first day he regretted telling Helen a lie about his expulsion from school.

LATER:

As Helen’s car leaves school, some students run after them. A student at Tony’s side of the window is seriously crying. At first Tony smiles, but this girl is seriously crying. Tony’s mood suddenly turns sober. Tony keeps staring at the girl till the girl is out of sight.

EXT. LAWN TENNIS COURT – DAY

Tony is looking lost as he plays tennis with Helen. Helen tries to cheer him but can’t seem to succeed.

TONY

(smiling)

What?

HELEN

What book were you reading?

TONY

The book you are holding.

HELEN

What topic?

TONY

(smiling)

Check the page you are holding.

HELEN

(seriously)

You have not been yourself for a while. What’s been bothering you?

TONY

Nothing.

HELEN

“I don’t want to talk about it” would have been better.

(pause)

I better be going.

TONY

Why?

HELEN

I just want to go home.

TONY

(thinks)

I don’t want to talk…

HELEN

(cuts in)

I can’t be your friend and you don’t tell me about your problems. What are friends for?

TONY

Okay. Please sit down.

Helen sits down.

TONY (CONT’D)

You see…

TONY (V.O.) (CONT’D)

No more lies. Not exactly the truth too.

TONY (CONT’D)

I was just surprised at the kind of influence you had on the girls at your school. I have never seen anyone have that influence on students.

HELEN

Is that it?

TONY

Yes.

(pause)

It’s just like realizing that your best friend is… the president’s daughter. You know how you would feel. It will be hard for you to completely come to terms with it.

(long pause)

I have usually had different kind of best friends.

(pause)

It’s hard coming to terms that you are my best friend now.

STELLA

Can’t you see the boy has changed? Why don’t you give him this chance?

UCHE

(smiling)

You see we all did all these things. We mess up, we pretend to have changed. Then we mess up again.

STELLA

That was why you said you were an evangelist when you wanted to marry me.

UCHE

You see. I came to your house every time carrying a bible. Didn’t your parents believe me? But in my own case, I had good intentions.

STELLA

(teasingly)

Honey, sweetie… please allow this boy go back to school. Please…

Stella kneels down.

UCHE

Okay. But you will be paying his fees this time around. I won’t waste my money again.

STELLA

(pause)

If you don’t pay his fees, it might affect him psychologically. It would look as if his father is no longer interested in him.

(pause)

Please do this for my sake. I know Tony has caused you a lot of problem.

UCHE

(correcting her)

Tony Montana, not Tony.

STELLA

Honey be serious now. Please continue paying his fees.

UCHE

(thinks for a while)

Since you want me to train my son without discipline, I will. However, if he messes up again, I will go look for another son.

STELLA

Who is talking about a second son now?

UCHE

Well… if no longer is talking about a second son now, then allow me train my only son the way I think is right. He will stay at home for a year.

Not you Tony.

Everyone keeps quiet.

STELLA (CONT’D)

Honey?

Uche continues sleeping. Stella wakes Uche.

STELLA (CONT’D)

Do you have anything to say?

UCHE

Well em… you have said a lot… and em… you said it all.

(to Tony)

Tony Montana, be a good boy. I know you are ready for some action.

STELLA

(smiling)

Good action. That will be all.

TONY

Am I not allowed to talk?

STELLA

Okay.

TONY

Well… I just want to thank you my dad and mum. I promise to be a good boy and take my studies seriously.

BEN

(expressionlessly)

Okay. I guess so. That would be good.

(to himself)

As crazy as his son.

TONY

(in a low voice)

You know you don’t have to hug me too? After emotional talks like this, you shake a man.

STELLA

So you are now a man?

TONY

Not really. But you can treat me like one.

Stella finishes talking to Tony and is about to shake him. As Tony stretches out his hand, Stella hugs him tightly. Tony looks at Helen and hugs Stella. They hug each other tightly for a long while.
